The United States' top intelligence agency, Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) says that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is the most dangerous and deadly extremist organization in the world. The official website of FBI in its tops story said that LTTE is far more dangerous terrorists outfit than al Queda, Hezbullah or even HAMAS. Read more...

Current Significant Issues

What is really happening in Sri Lanka today is that a blood thirsty racist group led by some misled Tamils called LTTE is terrorizing against the Government of Sri Lanka and its people irrespective of their ethnicity with an intention of carving out a separate state. There is no conflict as such between Sinhalese and Tamil communities in Sri Lanka. In fact, the majority of the Tamil community lives in peace and harmony among the Sinhalese population through out the country apart from the Northern part of Sri Lanka. The entire Sinhalese and the Muslims population who lived in the Northern area for centuries were either killed or chased away completely by the LTTE Tamil Tiger terrorists. At the moment, not a single Sinhalese or Muslim is living in Jaffna, but, many thousands of Tamils are living in Colombo in peace with the other communities. Based on 2001 census, the Tamil population in Colombo district is 12.1% (see 2001 census). So, who is discriminated ? Tamils or Sinhalese? Do you need more evidence ?

Indian intervention in Sri Lankan internal affairs

"Tamil Hitler - Made in India" Prabhakaran, who killed Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, is now seeking help from India.

Indian intervention in Sri Lankan affairs

  • They may be strong in armed forces but still they can't find a proper solution to Kashmir Problem (neither military nor political).
  • No matter how strong they are they still have terrorism problems like Chain Bombardments in their capital city, New Delhi, and attacks even inside their Parliament.
  • With all the technology to win space and with all the high tech gadgets in nuclear weaponry, they took more than 30 years to capture a single jungle thief Veerappan.
  • As a nation, collectively they are unable to derive a proper political solution to have a good relationship with neighbouring Pakistan for more than 6 decades.
  • Their politicians are still unable to convince Indian Muslims and Hindus to live in peace and harmony.
  • India had to draw back their RAW (Research and Analysis Wing - Indian intelligence) wing due to their unsuccessful interference in Sri Lanka that resulted in sacrificing their prime minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi. So, they have been unsuccessful in this matter once. So, their predictions are not always correct.
  • India is one of the major parties who aggravated this problem. They trained LTTE Tamil Tiger terrorists initially in south India including Prabakaran, Pottu Amman and Karuna Amman. They air supplied food stuff in the past to LTTE when were terribly in need. South India continuously smuggle combat stuff to LTTE.
  • As a nation no matter how hard they try to display a big image of their selves they have critical issues in their own country. They have racial issues, religious issues, economical issues, social issues and political issues. It is not the country we see in Bollywood films. Besides it is highly unethical to interfere the matters of another independent nation because we don't ask them what to do next. India simply don't have rights to do that.
  • South Indian politicians can come to Sri Lanka and travel through out the country to see where ethnic cleansing is. All the southern cities and all the offices there have Tamils living and working in harmony. But any of the northern cities don't have a single Sinhalese.  So, where is ethnic cleansing? So better not use unknown matters for their personal cheap short or long-term political gains.
  • We Sri Lankans don't have any other country to live in other than Sri Lanka. So, if anybody wants to give Tamils a separate country, please separate south India (Tamil Nadu) from what we currently call India, just like Pakistan and Bangladesh, and create a separate state for Tamils in the world. Tamil Nadu has all the necessities for them.

Tamil Tiger Terror Machine Forcibly Holding Civilians in the Vanni as a Human Shield

LTTE Tamil Tiger Terrorists are using 'civilians as shields', despite constant urges made by the Sri Lanka Government for the release of thousands stranded in its clutches".

Those who are expressing concern about the security of civilians in the Wanni have stopped short of calling for action against the LTTE, which is using people as a "Human Shield" in Kilinochchi and Mulaitivu. The Sri Lankan government has made arrangements to accommodate civilians to be evicted from the theatre of war, as it successfully did in the Eastern Province. If the LTTE lets go of civilians, the question of their security won’t arise. Therefore, it may be argued that anyone who laments about the plight of civilians without faulting the LTTE or pressuring it to release people in its clutches is, either wittingly or unwittingly, helping further the LTTE’s cause.

Between February 2002 and August 2005, 2,069 complaints were registered against the LTTE. Of these, 1,693 have been ruled as CFA violations. The SLMM had ruled that the total number of CFA violations committed by the LTTE, involving all categories, is 3,113. Of the 141 cases ruled as CFA violations by the Sri Lankan armed forces, there are no complaints of child recruitment. Pointing out that upto the end of August, the UNICEF had recorded 1,277 outstanding cases of child recruitment, the Coalition emphasised that "the recruitment of any child under the age of 18 for military purposes ? whether forced or voluntary ? is contrary to international human rights norms." Responses to Dr. John Whitehall, Pediatrician Director, Townsville Hospital Neonatal Unit Queensland, Australia.

The Chinese in Malaysia is not entitled to a second homeland in Malaysia where a large Chinese community lives. Its real homeland or native is China . Malaysia is the homeland of the Malays where they are the bhoomiputras. So why should Tamils be entitled to a second homeland in Sri Lanka when next door to this island is their real homeland having a history of many thousands of years of Tamil civilization? Any foreigner has only to visit Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu see the difference between the two countries and find out what the true Tamil homeland or native land is.
Homeland .......We should note the difference between a person's land of birth and his/her motherland (or fatherland as the Germans would say). The latter is the land of our ancestors who built a civilization culture and language for over two centuries. Accordingly Sri Lanka is the motherland of the Sinhalas. They have no other home land or mother land in any other part of the world, unlike the Tamils whose homeland is Tamil Nadu established on January 14, 1969. Ninety percent of the world's Tamil population lives in India and 75 percent of them in Tamil Nadu which is twice the size of Sri Lanka .

APRC Proposals ....... The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna has already warned the government that it would face dire consequences, at the forthcoming budget, if it backs the APRC proposals for a Federal State. JHU and MEP representatives of the APRC have publicly denounced the Chairman for his efforts to undermine the mandate received at the last presidential election for a unitary state. The persistent attempt by the Chairman of the APRC to sell a set of proposals based on the very same report of the expert panel, rejected by the main political parties (SLFP.JVP, JHU, MEP etc) who were instrumental when bringing the present regime into power, could drag the ruling circles into a difficult situation unless remedial action is taken in time.

Open Warrant Issued to Arrest Prabhakaran

High Court judge Sarath Ambepitiya issued an open warrant through the CID to arrest Prabhakaran and three others who were absconding. He said the LTTE leader was guilty on 51 counts and each count carried 20 years in jail making a total of 1020 years. But for practical purposes the Judge said he was imposing the sentence only on the first ten counts making a total of 200 years in jail.

Description
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is a Sri Lankan-based organization which advocates the creation of an independent homeland in the north and northeastern part of Sri Lanka which it has called "Tamil Eelam". Its war against the government of Sri Lanka has been fought on three fronts: a political campaign, guerrilla warfare, and a terrorist campaign. The LTTE is committed to using a variety of terror tactics in order to achieve its objectives, including attacking political, economic, religious and cultural targets, as well as targeting civilians. The LTTE's campaign has included plans to create Tamil-only northern and eastern provinces, and to this end it has aggressively expelled non-Tamils from these regions. The LTTE also endeavours to eliminate moderate Tamils and other Tamil militant groups that compete with it for influence and power within the Sri Lankan Tamil community.

New Zealand Sri Lankans show their gratitude to our front line heroes

Information Bulletin by SPUR NZ — 24 February 2009

In January 2009 our valiant forces started their victorious march towards Mullaitivu after defeating the terrorist resistances in Paranthan and Killinochchi. Several patriotic Sri Lankans living in New Zealand wanted to demonstrate their appreciation and gratitude to our valiant forces. They approached SPUR NZ and inquired the possibilities of organising a quick collection of funds and sending it to the heroic soldiers in the battle front in Vanni. SPUR NZ started the “Pass the Hat” project. During that period Mahinda Attanayake of SPUR NZ was in Sri Lanka and he managed to establish contacts with Major General Jagath Dias, the Commanding Officer of 57 Division of the Sri Lanka Army, through Col. ( Rtd ) Anil Amarasekera of Thavalama Foundation. At that particular time, the heroic 57 Division, under Major General Dias, has just begun their victorious march to Mullaithivu after raising the national flag in Killinochchi See details

Photographs, Videos found in terror TV station bare dark secrets - Sri Lankan soldiers of Army 58 Division have made a startling discovery exposing an abominable conspiracy against Sri Lankan citizens. The soldiers have found several recent photographs and video footage in a building earlier occupied by the LTTE terrorists showing certain South Indian politicians in LTTE camps in Wanni. According to defence sources in Puthukkudiyiruppu, these photographs and videos were discovered by the infantrymen of 6 Gemunu Watch (6GW) last afternoon (1 Mar), while engaged in clearing operations at the captured LTTE satellite communication center, in Puthukkudiyiruppu West. Defence.lk special correspondent in Puthukkudiyiruppu said that there were a number of photographs showing some of the South Indian politicians championing tribalism, actively participating in terrorist activities in Wanni. Leader of MDMK party in Tamil Nadu , Mr. Vaiko had been photographed in LTTE uniform, firing pistols with LTTE leader V. Prabhakaran, delivering brain-washing lectures to the LTTE terrorists, and having discussions with Prabhakaran. "There were photographs of several other South Indian politicians involved in LTTE activities including Mr. Nadumaran", he said. Meanwhile an analyst speaking to defence.lk, expressed his surprise at the shameless relationship, these South Indian politicians have with the convicted murderer of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Ghandhi. " Prabhakaran has called Mr.Vaiko as the person who would link Tamil Eelam to Tamil Nadu one day...these photographs reveal that the plans for a greater Tamil Eeelam had been already on the way" , the analyst said (Full report in Sri Lanka army).

For Canadian Parliamentarians interested in Sri Lanka - By Asoka Weerasinghe, Canada - Since the Emergency debate on Sri Lanka on Wednesday, 4th February 2009, which elicited a smorgasbord of views on Sri Lanka, which were mainly an amazing array of distortions of fact which diminished the intended sincerity and value of this discussion, I have made an effort to provide you all with facts on the ground on issues that were discussed, hoping to help you all to re-tool your intentions with a certain degree of sincerity, to help the Sri Lankan people, hopefully all ethnic groups and just not only the Tamils whom almost all of you represent in your Greater Toronto Area ridings.Intended for the Conservatives MPs: Lawrence Cannon (Minister of Foreign Affairs), Deepak Obhrai (Parliamentary Secretary to Minister of Foreign Affairs), Jim Abbott (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Cooperation), Bev Oda (Minister of International Cooperation), Jason Kenney (Minister of Immigration & Citizenship), Pierre Poilievre, Peter Kent (Minister of State of Foreign Affairs). 55 Div thrash LTTE offensive attempt: 2 LTTE boats destroyed - Mullaittivu - LTTE terrorists suffered a successive defeat at Mullaittivu, when 55 Div troops thwarted an LTTE offensive attempt North of Puthumathalan, reportedly destroying 2 LTTE boats while damaging another today (March 2). According to battlefield reports, LTTE terrorists have launched 15 boats including 4 suicide craft assisted with simultaneous heavy mortar fire at security forces directed from the declared no fire zone. Heavy fighting was reported in the area between security forces and LTTE since Sunday(March 1) morning 8 till 5p.m. Terrorists have launched the attack in clear desperation in order to boost the disintegrating morale of its cadres while instilling fear among the civilians who are seeking protection with security forces. Intercepted LTTE communication confirmed heavy damages to LTTE, security sources said adding that senior LTTE terrorists including Soosai and Lawrence have commanded the LTTE attack. More information will follow (Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

The situation in Sri Lanka - by S.L.Gunasekara, Attorney-at-Law - The `Situation in Sri Lanka’ today, is briefly that the lawful Government of the Country is now on the verge of defeating militarily, a set of ruthless terrorists (the LTTE) who had forcibly usurped control of about one fourth (1/4th) of the Country’s territory, in the exercise of its undoubted right to reclaim its territory from that usurper. Having read in the newspapers and the Internet of a "Congressional Caucus on Sri Lanka and Sri Lankan Americans" as well as of a hearing about Sri Lanka in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee I pen these words on the subject so as to disabuse the minds of the American Legislators of the disinformation fed to them by the pro-LTTE lobby. First, let me introduce myself. I am a 65 year old Sinhalese `Agnostic’ born to a Christian family and hence a baptized Methodist, who has spent all his life in Sri Lanka, an Attorney-at-Law with over 40 years continuous practice, a former Crown Counsel in the Attorney General’s Department [a State Prosecutor], a former external examiner in Industrial Law for the Master of Laws Degree of the University of Colombo, an Arbitrator at several Commercial Arbitrations, a Government delegate to the first set of `Peace Talks’ with the terrorists at Thimphu, Bhutan in 1985, a former Member of Parliament and the author of seven (7) books on Sri Lanka’s separatist problem which is wrongly referred to as an ethnic problem (Full report in Island).

Several soldiers also sustained injuries due to terrorist small arms and mortar fire. In the meantime, troops of 57 Division conducted search and clear operations in VISUAMADU area and recovered three T-56 weapons, three sniper weapons, sixteen hand grenades, one Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG), seventeen claymore mines, three hundred and sixty two pounder bombs, 12 kg of Try-Nitro Toluene (TNT) explosives, seventeen claymore stands, twenty improvised explosive devices (IEDs), sixty-two antipersonnel mines, six hundred and five 81 mm mortar bombs, one hundred and ten hand grenade parts, two 60 mm mortar bombs, twenty-five 60 mm mortar barrels, fifty-seven detonators, fifty meter long detonator code, fifty terrorist maps, one I-com receiver, one frequency monitor, one communication base station, one high frequency base station and thirty Arul bombs on the same day (1). Meanwhile, troops of the 58 Division recovered a large terrorist boat of 40 ft in length and 20 ft in width, two suicide jackets and a Large number of claymore mines in AMPALAVANPOKKANAI on Sunday (1) morning (Sri Lanka Army)..

Photos of T. Nadu politicians found in LTTE hideouts Colombo (IANS): The Sri Lankan military has found photographs and videos showing politicians from India's Tamil Nadu state in the company of Tamil Tiger leaders in the island's north, it was announced on Monday. The defence ministry said soldiers combing abandoned bases of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) discovered the photographs as well as videos of the politicians with LTTE boss Velupillai Prabhakaran. These included MDMK leader Vaiko, a long-time MP and a vocal supporter of the LTTE, and P. Nedumaran, who has known Prabhakaran since the early 1980s when the LTTE chief was a largely unknown figure. Both Nedumaran and Vaiko made clandestine visits to LTTE territory in Sri Lanka in the 1980s to meet Prabhakaran. Vaiko spent about a month in LTTE zone in 1989, when Indian troops were battling the Tigers in Sri Lanka's northeast. Nedumaran also made a similar trip to the island in 1985, again spending about a month there. "The soldiers have found several recent photographs and video footage in a building earlier occupied by the LTTE terrorists, showing certain south Indian politicians in LTTE camps in Wanni," the ministry said. It said soldiers from the 58 Division "made (the) startling discovery" when they captured an LTTE satellite communication centre to the west of Puthukkudiyiruppu, the last township held by the Tigers in the north. "Vaiko had been photographed in LTTE uniform, firing pistols with Prabhakaran, delivering brain-washing lectures to the LTTE terrorists, and having discussions with Prabhakaran," it said. It claimed that there were a number of photographs "showing some south Indian politicians championing tribalism, actively participating in terrorist activities in Wanni". Nearly 200 people, including Vaiko, were arrested and remanded to judicial custody Saturday in Tamil Nadu for showing black flags to External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and burning his photographs (Hindu).

More facilities to IDPs in Northern Sri Lanka - By: Gamini Goonarathne - Government Agent in Vavuniya Sunday(March 1) met with the representatives of Non Governmental Organizations NGOs) operating in the welfare centers for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and decided to increase the facilities provided to the people. Mrs. P. Charles, Government Agent in Vavuniya said the decision was taken at a special meeting held yesterday morning with the participation of Non Government Organizations. She said that there is no shortage of any essential items for the civilians at the IDP centers as the government is supplying all their basic needs. She added that the IDPs are currently preparing their own meals and the items needed to prepare the meals are supplied by the government. The Government Agent said the people affected by yesterday's sudden fire at the welfare camp in Punthottam have been transferred to another camp in Sidambarampuram in Vavuniya. Mrs. Charles said that permanent medical centers have been set up at each IDP camp to address the medical needs of the people. The Ministry has provided sufficient medical supplies and all the 12 camps in Vavuniya have a health centre at each camp. According to statistics from Health Ministry, 31, 990 persons representing 9,913 families are currently living in the 12 IDP camps in Vavuniya. A team of 35 medical officers, 15 consultants, and 120 nurses work on a weekly rotation basis. Government said that nearly 750 pregnant women have already reached the welfare centers in Vavuniya (Full report in Sri Lanka Army).

Grenade Launcher Cartridges Recovered - EAST: TROOPS engaged in search operations in PALLACHCHENAI area recovered four 40 mm from the area on Sunday (1) evening (Sri Lanka Army)..

Soldiers rescue more civilians amid heavy artillery and mortar fire from NFZ - Sri Lankan soldiers are continuing on their noble mission to rid the country of terrorism and to free civilians held hostage by the terrorists in Puthukkudiyiruppu, battlefield sources reveal. According to the sources the soldiers have been facing severe resistance from the terrorists who seemed to have placed all their heavy artillery and mortar guns in the No Fire Zone (NFZ) demarcated for the civilians. Battlefield reports indicate that 58 Division soldiers thrusting into Puthukkudiyiruppu from west and northwest have given heavy beating to the terrorists during last 24 hours. The infantrymen of 8 Gajaba Regiment (8GR) and 12GR braved incessant shelling coming from NFZ and destroyed several LTTE outposts established to prevent civilians coming (Full report in Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

Alert Troops Foil Tigers’ Infiltration Attempt - MULLAITTIVU: ONE MORE effort by the LTTE to infiltrate PALAMATHTHAN Army defences south of CHALAI was thwarted during small hours Monday (2) by the 55 Division troops who had already advanced about 2 km ahead of the LTTE-made earth bund pierced by the soldiers Saturday (28). Having observed a large number of Tiger terrorists onboard at least ten Sea Tiger boats moving from the direction of the ‘Safe Zone’ in the southeast of CHALAI, the 55 Division alerted all troops deployed along the coastal line. As the flotilla drew closer to the shore in the dark, a barrage of artillery, mortar, Rocket Propeller Gun (RPG) and small arms fire was mounted on it forcing the Tiger boats to turn away with extensive damages. It was on Sunday (1) that the troops who noticed a small group of Tiger terrorist infiltrators in PALAMATHTHAN cordoned the area and fired at them. One female LTTE terrorist, in the wake of Army offensives, committed suicide detonating a suicide jacket while others went in hiding amidst continuous fire by the troops. Search and clear operations are on in the area (Sri Lanka Army).

Another 281 civilians rescued from terror clutches with navy assistance - Mullaittivu - Sri Lanka Navy has facilitated rescuing of 281 civilians held captive by the LTTE terrorists in Mullaittivu. Navy sources said that, the 6th batch of civilians including patients requiring immediate medical attention was transported to Trincomalee by the "MV Greed Ocean" yesterday (Feb 28). The Navy provided the safe passage for the vessel carrying civilians from Mullaittivu and received the passengers at Trincomalee harbour. Navy medical teams provided immediate medical treatment to the needy patients upon disembarkation and rushed them to the government hospital Trincomalee for further treatment. MV Green Ocean has been charted by the government of Sri Lanka in order to rescue civilians held as human shield by the LTTE terrorists in Mullaittivu. The International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) sails the ship under its flag. The Government Hospital of Trincomalee has been sufficiently staffed and provided with adequate stocks of medicine by the Health Ministry of Sri Lanka in order to meet the requirement. According to the Navy source, the last batch of civilians included 95 men, 128 women and 58 children. Out of them 65 men and 72 females were patients. From 10th February 2009, Sri Lanka navy has assisted rescuing of 1907 civilians including large number of patients by MV Green Ocean. This was in addition to the large number of civilians rescued by Sri Lanka navy sea units deployed in the Northeastern coastal waters (Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

UNSC reach consensus: No ceasefire call to Lanka - LTTE must lay down arms - Influence Tigers to let go civilians - Sir John Holmes - A UN Security Council on Friday received a briefing by Under Secretary General Sir John Holmes who visited Sri Lanka at President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s invitation last week.  The briefing did not result in a ceasefire call to Sri Lanka from the Security Council, but general agreement that the LTTE must lay down arms and ease suffering of civilians. Sir John Holmes told reporters that humanitarian concerns about the people held captive by the LTTE remains a major concern while the concerns about IDPs who have already come to cleared areas seems less than what was feared for. He was strongly critical of the LTTE’s continuing ruthlessness by not allowing people to leave the conflict area. Sir John had good words about increasing cooperation with the Government and made positive comments about the Government’s policy and objective to send back about 80 per cent of IDPs as soon as possible or within a year. Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama told the media yesterday that the Government is thankful to the United Nations for its better understanding of the ground situation in Sri Lanka. He was strongly critical of the LTTE’s continuing ruthlessness by not allowing people to leave the conflict area. Sir John appealed to all those with any influence on the position of the Tigers to use that influence to force them to let the civilians go. “There is no time to lose,” he said. He described the situation of trapped people as dire but acknowledged IDPS in transit camps are reasonably well. He was not aware of major outbreak of disease in the conflict area (Full report in Daily News).

The sovereignty Sri Lanka never regained - By Janaka Perera - Monday March 2, marks the 194th anniversary of the day when Sinhala fools handed over pre-colonial Sri Lanka’s last independent kingdom on a platter to the British. The signatories to the Kandyan Convention of March 2, 1815 little realized that in trying to get rid of an alleged tyrannical ruler (King Sri Wickrema Rajasinghe) they were giving power to a gang of suave and sophisticated Anglo-Saxon liars who would not only never honour their pledges but also never give up trying to tame the natives even 60 years after a 133-year direct rule. The recent Des Browne fiasco is the best example of this British neo-colonial mentality. The Sri Lankan Government took the right step in telling them where to get off. The incident is a clear proof that the former colonial power does not want us to really regain the sovereignty we lost in 1815. And joining in this unwarranted campaign to 'civilize' us are America’s ex-diplomats and 'human rights' champions. Many of them still insist that we negotiate with the LTTE but maintain a deafening silence when it comes to NATO and the United States warning Pakistan against seeking a truce with the Taliban. Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi raised his concerns with U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton about US drones that have killed not only wanted Al-Qaeda militants but also many civilians. These are of no concern to those Western pundits who pontificate on humanitarian issues in Sri Lanka’s North. But they dare not give similar advice to big-power India which is facing worse humanitarian problems in several of her states – most notably Kashmir (Full report in Asian Tribune).

The Logic of Mr. Pranab Mukherjee - By L. Jayasooriya - When a person cannot do what he wants to do and has to take orders from subordinates just to survive even men of good education could expose themselves to ridicule. I refer to what Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, Minister for External Affairs of India has stated below.  A news item in the media states that Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, has appealed to Sri Lanka to accept the LTTE’s offer of a ceasefire so that the civilians trapped in the war zone can be moved to safety. He further says that though the offer falls short of a declaration of a willingness to lay down arms he feels that the government of Sri Lanka should seize the opportunity presented by the LTTE. In his declaration I think he missed out two words. Instead of saying "should seize the opportunity presented by the LTTE" it would have been more appropriate if he had said "should seize the opportunity so magnanimously presented by the LTTE". I ask Mr. Mukherjee whether if the Sri Lanka army were to hold a ceasefire the LTTE would let the civilians that they use as a human shield escape to freedom among the government troops. I do not wait for an answer. He then brings in rather out of context, devolution of powers as required by India. If Mr. Mukherjee is worried about it he can rest assured that this country will never be divided into fragments (Full report in Asian Tribune).

Civilian foils LTTE bid to kidnap children - A civilian had prevented an LTTE attempt to kidnap children from the No Fire Zone. The civilian had grabbed the fire-arm of one of the three LTTE cadres who came to kidnap children and fired at the kidnappers. In the ensuing gun battle the civilian and the LTTE cadres have all died but the children were saved from being kidnapped. An INGO volunteer who witnessed this scene is said to have informed the diplomatic community about the incident, said a press release issued by Director, Government Information Department Anusha Pelpita (Daily News).

A9 opened for ‘Jaffna convoys’ - With the opening of the Kandy-Jaffna A9 road today (March 2), the government will be able to sharply reduce the scope of a costly naval operation to move military and civilian supplies to the Jaffna peninsula, officials said. The SLAF, too, could lessen its flights to and from the peninsula, they said. Three private airline operators, Expo Air, Deccan Air and Daya Aviation may face tough competition after the launch of luxury bus services to the Jaffna peninsula, they said, asserting that the opening of the overland route would help bring down the cost of living. Military spokesperson Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara told The Island that the opening of the A9 would be limited to the armed forces and police. Responding to our queries, he said that although the option of sea movements would remain, the armed forces would largely depend on the overland route. The first convoys to and from the Jaffna peninsula will move today, he said. The Trincomalee-KKS sea supply route was maintained by the navy at a tremendous cost to the taxpayer, since the government lost control of the A9 during the Premadasa administration in the 1990. The navy had paid a heavy price in both men and material to sustain the lifeline (Full report in Island).

Vaiko held for black flag demo THOOT HUKUDI: MDMK general secretary Vaiko and 184 of his party functionaries\ were arrested here on Satur-day when they attempted to show black flags to External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee. Vaiko along with his party cadre had assembled in front of the BSNL general manager’s office to show black flags to Pranab, condemning the Union Government’s inaction on the Sri Lankan Tamil issue. Pictures of the Union Minsiter were burnt by the MDMK functionaries during the protest, according to agency reports (Full report in Island).

Promoting terrorism the UN way - Why terrorism is flourishing in the modern world like the Black Death taking a heavy toll on humanity could be seen from the flurry of pro-terror activity at the apex international body, the UN. The infiltration by terrorists of the UN system is such that even the Security Council is pussyfooting without tackling the issue of terrorism the way it should. While the security forces are poised to deal a decapitating blow to the LTTE at home, Sri Lankan envoys are engaged in defensive warfare on the diplomatic front in New York to prevent pro-terror elements from pressuring the UN to throw a lifeline to the beleaguered terrorists. A glorified blogger by the name of Mathew Lee, we learn, has placed himself over and above the representatives of sovereign states at the UN and is openly carrying out an anti-Sri Lanka campaign with a view to helping the LTTE. Would an Al Qaeda backer been allowed to operate at the UN in that manner? Freedom that confederates of terrorists in the garb of bloggers or journalists or human rights activists enjoy to carry out malicious campaigns against member states only gives an impetus to the UN's downhill journey as a failed outfit. It looks as if the time had come for the UN to open its membership for terrorist outfits as well (Full report in island).

Anti-LTTe protest opposite UK MP’s office - A protest march was staged in London on Saturday opposite the office of British Parliamentarian Keith Vaz. The MP has been pushing for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka and has been seen by some groups as being sympathetic towards the LTTE. The protest in Leicester started outside Mr Vaz's office with approximately 300 supporters in attendance, the Defence Ministry said. Leicester MP, Keith Vaz, had urged the British Parliament to press for an immediate ceasefire of the ongoing military operations in northern Sri Lanka leading to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown appointing Des Brown as Coordinator to the Government of Sri Lanka. This appointment was immediately rejected by the Sri Lankan government. The peaceful protest was threatened by the arrival of LTTE supporters, but, seeking to keep the peace, police refused them access. One LTTE supporter who ignored the police order, was arrested and taken to the local police station. Later that evening, Mr Vaz arrived and addressed the protesters, inviting them to his office to request the reason for the protest and answer any questions. Around 20 protestors, including two buddhist monks, were among them. Among others, the protestors raised the following questions: "Why do you support the banned terrorism organisation, LTTE?" and, "Why do you urge the government of Sri Lanka to call an immediate ceasefire due to the humanitarian crisis?" Mr Vaz was unable to produce satisfactory answers to these questions. Mr Vaz did, however, recognise the request of the protestors and indicated that he would like to discuss the current situation in Northern Sri Lanka with Sri Lankan government officials including the President of Sri Lanka. A petition was then handed to Mr Vaz. Mr Vaz invited Buddhist monks to pray for peace in Sri Lanka (Full report in Daily Mirror).

Advancing troops recover many Tiger vehicles -  Military sources said advancing troops in the Puthukuduyiruppu area in the Vanni recovered more than 400 vehicles abandoned by the LTTE within the last 10 days alone. Among these vehicles worth millions of rupees are jeeps, vans, armored trucks, bulldozers, backhoes etc. Civilians fleeing Tiger controlled areas told troops that the LTTE had seized many vehicles belonging to civilians that had been used by them to come out of Killinochchi and these vehicles were later used by the LTTE for their terror tactics. Military sources said the Tigers are in the process of fleeing and were unable to safeguard any of their possessions (Daily Mirror).

Navy rescues civilian captives in Mullaitivu - The Lanka Navy has facilitated rescuing of 281 civilians held captive by the LTTE terrorists in Mullaitivu. The Navy provided the safe passage for the vessel carrying civilians from Mullaitivu and received the passengers at Trincomalee harbour. Navy medical teams provided immediate medical treatment to the needy patients upon disembarkation and rushed them to the government hospital Trincomalee for further treatment. The International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) sails the ship under its flag. The government hospital of Trincomalee has been sufficiently staffed and provided with adequate stocks of medicine by the Lankan Health Ministry in order to meet the requirement. This was in addition to the large number of civilians rescued by Sri Lanka navy sea units deployed in the Northeastern coastal waters (Daily Mirror).

Economic and Social Progress in Sri Lanka during Post-War Period - By Sunil Wimalawansa - (March 01, Washington, Sri Lanka Guardian) Now that the physical eradication of Tamil-tiger terrorism (LTTE) is nearing its end, the country must focus on infrastructure and rehabilitation development programs. The economic bases – agriculture, infrastructure, tanks and irrigation systems – that were destroyed by terrorism need to be rebuilt. Sri Lanka lost the opportunity she had following the tsunami to build purpose-designed new cities in the affected area. This is the second chance for the government to plan and build well-designed energy efficient and pollution free (unsubsidized alternate energy programs) brand new cities and settlements in the North and Eastern regions in Sri Lanka. The latter is critically important in these areas in order to accommodate those who fled the LTTE violence, and for those who are willing to relocate in these areas to get on with their lives. However, this needs to go hand-in-hand with the creation of job opportunities and the physical and psychological rehabilitation of those civilians and the armed force personnel who were injured and traumatized over the years of violence, as well as the surrendered terrorists (Full report in Sri Lanka Guardian).

BUDDHIST MONK TELLS KEITH VAZ THAT HANDFUL OF POLITICIANS BETRAY THE TRUTH DESPITE SRILANKAN BELIEF THAT BRITISHERS ARE FOR FAIRPLAY (By Walter Jayawardhana)Immediately after hundreds of  strong anti-Vaz demonstration of Sri Lankans in front of the political office of Member of Parliament Keith Vaz  was held,  Venerable Handupelpola Mahinda Thero told him in his office  despite the impression that Sri Lankans got that Britishers are for fair play and justice a handful of British politicians merely betray the truth for the sake of  few votes.Venerable Mahinda, made the blunt statement, after leaders of the demonstration, were allowed inside Mr. Vaz’s political office for negotiations  after  more than 300 strong demonstrators  were charging the UK parliamentarian of “misguiding” the United Kingdom on Sri Lanka by “misrepresentation of facts”  during about a four hour demonstration in front of No. 144 Upmine Road, Lester in the constituency of the ruling Labour Party MP. In response to the allegations by the demonstrators Mr. Vaz said he was representing the views of thousands of Tamils in his electorate and  no opposing view had been conveyed to him before. He said he had never been allowed inside the country for him to witness for himself. When the noisy slogan shouting demonstration started in noon some Indian supporters of Vaz attempted to persuade the organizers to stop it on the way with the promise of getting an audience with Vaz, who virtually has become allegedly an immitator  of allegations by the British Tamil Forum , a front of the banned LTTE in London. The organizers refused the request of the turbaned supporters of the politician and continued with the demonstration. Meanwhile eight vehicles of the British Tamil Forum  were parading the streets with banners on their sides with anti-Sri Lanka slogans and disturbing the demonstration. Later, the police officers of Lester Constabulary stopped the “disturbing” vehicles (Full report and photos in SPUR).

TNA fails to come up with rescue plans to save innocent Tamils other than insisting on a ceasefire to safeguard the LTTE - By K.T.Rajasingham - : The Tamil National Alliance has failed to comeN.Srikantha M.P: "Well what actions we can take rather than appealing to the conscience of the international community, which by large remains a silent spectator?." up with any solutions to solve the human tragedy of saving the innocent Tamil civilians trapped in the conflict zone, who are allegedly held as human shield by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The TNA is hell-bent on finding ways to rescue the LTTE from being ejected from the country, by urging for a ceasefire rather than coming up with a rescue plan to safeguard the Tamil civilians from the clutches of the Tamil armed group. After the Independent of Sri Lanka in 1948, the Tamil Political parties which represented the Tamils of the North and East of the country have failed to win the equal rights of the Tamils. In 1977 the Tamil armed groups took over forcefully from the political parties by threat and intimidations and subsequently LTTE banned other groups and waged an armed conflict up to 2007, propagating a separate mono-ethnic state agenda. Many thousands died and no solution was on sight and armed struggle was a colossal failure. Presently, while the final battle is now being fought in Puthukkudiyiruppu, a Vanni heartland and in the Mullaitivu coasts, more than 70, 000 Tamil civilians are held hostages, in other words as human shield by the LTTE. Efforts are made to rescue them from the clutches of the LTTE . International Community has repeatedly urged the LTTE to allow the innocent Tamils to go for safe areas (Full report in Asian Tribune).

LTTE must lay down arms: No ceasefire call to Sri Lanka – consensus at UN Security Council Sri Lanka not on Security Council agenda "Influence Tigers to let civilians go" – Sir John Holmes - The UN Security Council on Friday (27) received a briefing by Under Secretary General Sir John Holmes who visited Sri Lanka at President Rajapaksa’s invitation last week. The briefing did not result in a ceasefire call to Sri Lanka from the Security Council, but general agreement that the LTTE must lay down arms and ease suffering of civilians. At the end of the briefing, Sir John Holmes told reporters that humanitarian concerns about the people held captive by the LTTE remains a major concern while the concerns about IDPs who have already come to cleared areas seems less than what was feared for. He was strongly critical of the LTTE’s continuing ruthlessness by not allowing people to leave the conflict area. Sir John had good words about increasing cooperation with the government and made positive comments about the Government’s policy and objective to send back about 80 percent of IDPs as soon as possible or within a year. He was strongly critical of the LTTE’s continuing ruthlessness by not allowing people to leave the conflict area. Sir John appealed to "all those with any influence on the position of the Tigers to use that influence to force them to let the civilians go". "There is no time to lose," he said. He described the situation of trapped people as dire but acknowledged IDPS in transit camps are reasonably well. He was not aware of major outbreak of disease in the conflict area. He gave some descriptions of his conversations with IDPs and commented on the fairly satisfactory physical conditions and the efforts made to have acceptable screening procedures (Full report in Sunday Island).

LTTE forcibly holding civilians There is no genocide in Sri Lanka says Human Rights Watch representative - By Sujeeva Nivunhella in London - The Sri Lankan government is not committing genocide in the North, said Charu Lata Hogg of Human Rights Watch. It is the LTTE which is forcibly holding innocent civilians as a human shield and shoot at them when they try to flee. There are certainly international guidelines which have to be met in a conflict situation. Sri Lanka cannot just be accused of genocide. Ms. Hogg was participating in a discussion, "Reactive Media Talk: Sri Lanka - a hollow victory?", held in London on February 24, organized by Frontline Club. She said that more than 2000 civilians were killed and over 5000 injured since January 2009 in the Northern battlefront in Sri Lanka. "Both Government troops and the LTTE are responsible for that. It is not only the Sri Lankan Army -- there have been killings and shootings by the LTTE as well. A large number of injuries have been caused to civilians as a result of the LTTE firing at them, Hogg said. She also said around 40,000 civilians have already escaped from LTTE clutches and reached government controlled areas. They are being looked after by the government in welfare centres. At this point, a group of Tamils in the audience tried to heckle her. Priyath Liyanage of BBC Sinhala Service chaired this discussion while R. Jayadevan of the Alliance for Peace and Reconciliation in Sri Lanka, Pearl Thevanayagam and Francis Harrison (Journalists) and Charu Lata Hogg (Human Rights Watch) were in the panel. Leader publisher Lal Wickrematunge joined the discussion from Colombo over the phone (Full report in Sunday Island).

THE KARAMETIYA VILLAGE MASSACRE BY TAMIL TIGERS - Where are the Peace advocates? By Malin Abeyatunge, Melbourne, Australia - When LTTE gunned down 7 fleeing Tamil civilians including two women and two children in mid January, the so-called peace advocates did not utter a word of sympathy or condemnation of LTTE for the dastardly act. Instead, there were hundreds of eulogies and hosanna sang for Late Lashanta Wickrematunga which happened in the same week because he was an icon of the elite unlike those poor hapless Tamil civilians. The peace mongers, INGOs and NGO’s who advocate peace were deaf and dumb when these fleeing innocent Tamils were killed. LTTE has now almost lost its conventional war power and back to attack innocent Sinhala villagers as in the past. LTTE has recommenced their ethnic cleansing of Sinhalese and destruction of well knit Sinhala villages in the East. Last week,  a LTTE cell operating in the Eastern province had attacked Karametiya village in Inginiyagala and shot and hacked to death 21 villagers which included women and children and injuring over 20 people. These villagers were chena cultivators carrying out their simple life style living a day to day life contented with what they have without pestering the ruling government. The villagers in these remote areas do not demand moon and star from the government unlike the urban folks who go on strike and demos for minor things aroused by political parties. But yet, these villagers have become a forgotten lot when the full concentration is now on the hapless Tamil civilians in LTTE’s captivity (Read full article in SPUR).

APPOINT A PRESIDENTIAL COMMISSION TO INVESTIGATE INTO SIVA PASUPATHY’S ROLE AS FORMER ATTORNEY GENERAL.  By Malin Abeyatunga, Melbourne, Australia - This is an extract of a media release by socalled Australians for Human Rights of the Voiceless headed by former AG Sivapasupathy who had free education up to graduation and rose up to be the AG (Discrimination against majority Sinhalese ?) and may be still  drawing Sri Lankan pension. He is one of the most ungrateful sons of Sri Lanka.Quote An Australian Human Rights Organisation, Australians for Human Rights of the Voiceless headed by Hon Shiva Pasupati, Former Attorney General of Sri Lanka has strongly criticised Sri Lankan Government’s Genocidal war on minority Tamils and said, “We are alarmed that the human rights atrocities in Sri Lanka have reached genocidal proportions” . It further called on United Nations Secretary General to intervene immediately and said “As things are, it is extremely important the UN SG seriously consider the dispatch of a monitoring mission that would undoubtedly serve to mitigate the severity of the atrocities that the internally displace people have to endure.”UnquoteI wrote this letter in 2006 exposing his involvement with LTTE terrorists and sent to The Island, Daily Mirror and Daily news but never got published. I thought It’s more timely to reproduce that letter (Read full letter in SPUR).

SPUR extends sympathy and shares the grief of family members and friends of the many Victorians who were fatally injured by the bush fires and thousands of others whose houses and livelihoods were destroyed, SPUR requests all Sri Lankans to extend a helping hand to all victims of the bush fires (See details)

Humanitarian assistance to Vanni civilians: Holms’ report favourable - United Nations Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Sir John Holmes who visited Sri Lanka recently has given a favourable report to the UN Security Council on February 27 in New York on the humanitarian assistance provided by the Government of Sri Lanka to the civilians who were earlier held captive by the LTTE as human shields as well as to those who have managed to escape and come into the Government controlled areas, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday. The statement further said: “Sir John described the situation of trapped people as dire but acknowledged IDP in transit camps are reasonably well. He stated that he was not aware of major outbreak of diseases in the conflict area. He gave some description of his conversations with IDPs and commented on the fairly satisfactory physical conditions and the efforts made to have acceptable screening procedures. “The remarks of Ambassadors of Security Council member states to the media following the briefing by Sir John reflected their appreciation of the sincere and commendable efforts of the Sri Lankan Government to render assistance to its citizens who are caught up in the conflict, amidst extremely difficult ground conditions” (Sunday Observer).

Among the equipment captured from the LTTE Tamil Tiger Terrorists...

Diplomacy, Politics, Terrorism, and Aid - By Prof Wijesiri Danthanarayana Emeritus Professor of Zoology School of Environmental and Rural Science The University of New England NSW 2351, Australia - I had the privilege of listening to President Obama's inaugural address. I presume that all politicians of the Sri Lankan Parliament, Sri Lankan media persons, the NGOs, INGOs, and in particular, the Human Rights advocates (and activists) were also able to tune-in. The main thrust of the Obsma speech was clear; this is that when a country is in trouble each and every member of that country support the government of the day to resolve the problem, irrespective of political, ethnic, religious and other differences that may exist, and that terrorism in is the foremost problem in most countries in the world today. I consider it my duty as a Sri Lankan patriot, who migrated to Australia 38 years ago, put forward my views on the issue of the LTTE (aka Tamil Tiger) Terrorism that did not exist at the time I left the country in 1970. From the news I read, hear and see it is clear that what is happening in Sri Lanka is exactly the opposite of what Obama said about resolving the issue of terrorism. A well established fact is that Tamil Tigers are no more than a group of terrorists of the worst kind in the world today. Atrocities it has carried out includes murder of local and foreign political leaders, introducing the tool of suicide bombing to the world of terrorism, elimination of all Tamil political leaders, ethnic cleansing of the Sinhala and Muslim communities from the Northern and Eastern provinces, recruitment of child soldiers, and using innocent civilians as human shields against the orders from the UN and the Red Cross (Full report in LankaWeb).

Seeman sentenced to 1 year imprisonment - Director Seeman has been sentenced to one year imprisonment by the Puducherry court. Seeman, who was arrested by the Tamil Nadu police, was out on bail for delivering speeches on the Sri Lankan issue, which was considered to be detrimental to India’s sovereignty. The director’s recent speech at an event in Puducherry again fueled controversies and the Puducherry police were on the look out for him. Seeman ultimately surrendered in Nellai after participating in yet another Sri Lankan rally. The case against Seeman for sedition was taken up by the Puducherry court and he was sentenced to one year imprisonment under the National Security Act. This is probably the first time a director from the Tamil film industry is being sentenced under this Act (Full report in Behind woods).

OPEN LETTER TO INDIAN LOKH SABAH - By Stanley Perera from Melbourne My dear Indian Lokh Sabah, INDIA MUST APPOLOGISE TO SRI LANKA Sri Lanka has been going through a hell with the mass murder, suicide bombing and destruction to the property by the Tamil Tiger Terrorists. Over 70,000 innocent and unarmed civilians have been massacred to death. Destruction to the public property is enormous. For 25 odd years the whole nation has been living in fear of getting blown up by the terrorist bombs. The whole country has been mourning for the loss of their loved ones. There has been no development in the northern and eastern districts in those 25 years. The people in the whole country suffered enormously. The enormity of pain and suffering, loss of life and damage to the property cannot be estimated in dollars and cents. Sri Lanka over the period of 25 years spent a colossal amount of money on the defence of the country. Terrorist Group LTTE was formed in the early 1980s by the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and South Indian Chief Minister M.G.Ramachandran. Indira gave US$10 million to the terrorist group out of Indian tax payer’s money while Ramachandran together with Indian RAW provided the terrorist with guerrilla training, arms and weapons and all other necessary equipment and material for the terrorist activities in Sri Lanka. Also Ramachandran supplied the LTTE terrorists with food, fuel, men women and children to fight in the war. All terrorist activities were conducted in Sri Lanka in conniving with the South Indian corrupt politicians. To justify the terrorism in Sri Lanka, India invented an imaginary ethnic issue. India thereafter became a bully brother to Sri Lanka pestering on political solution to the non existing ethnic issue. To-date nobody has been able to explain what this ethnic issue or the legitimate grievances of the Sri Lankan Tamil People. It is a fact and not a myth that India created the world’s deadliest and ruthless terrorist group LTTE to conduct terrorist activities in Sri Lanka. The whole world knows about it. India therefore hold responsible for the destruction and mass killing in Sri Lanka by the terrorist group LTTE. THEREFORE INDIA MUST APPLOGISE TO SRI LANKA (Full report in LankaWeb).

SAARC Foreign Ministers resolved to Combat Terrorism take measures to Economic Crisis in the region - The just concluded 31st session of the SAARC Council of Ministers, SAARC Member States and Senior Officials concentrated on two major issues that warranted their serious and immediate attention – combating terrorism and the global economic crisis and ways to end it in the region. Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama when briefing the media personnel said heeding to the call of the Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Council of Ministers ably assisted by the Foreign Secretaries of SAARC Member States and Senior Officials, adopted two important documents, namely, "The SAARC Ministerial Declaration on Cooperation in Combating Terrorism” and the statement on Global Economic Crisis." Sri Lankan Foreign Minister pointed out that "The Declaration on Cooperation in Combating Terrorism is significant for the region. It reiterates and re-emphasizes the common and collective resolve of all SAARC Member States to work together to eliminate the scourge of terrorism from our region. You would also observe agreement voiced in the Declaration to consider the development of an integrated border management mechanism. This is the first occasion on which such agreement has been voiced by Member States. We also decided to establish a High-Level Group of Eminent Experts to review and make proposals to further strengthen the SAARC anti-terrorism mechanisms, including for pragmatic cooperation." (Full report in Asian Tribune).

Terrorism, common challenge: Rajapaksa - Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Friday urged the South Asian countries for an immediate and “collective response” to deal with the menace of terrorism afflicting the region. At the SAARC Foreign Ministers conference here, Mr. Rajapaksa said terrorism impacted the whole region, in one way or another. The conference which concludes on Saturday is expected to adopt a declaration on terrorism. One of the main elements of the declaration pertains to the need for a review of all the declarations and instruments adopted by the SAARC over the years to tackle the challenges posed by terrorism. “Our societies bear the brunt of the evil force of terrorism. But, we cannot and should not allow even a single citizen of South Asia to suffer as a result of the brutal violence unleashed by terrorists. Therefore, we need to re-double our efforts to combat this menace individually and collectively.” He said the SAARC member-countries cannot shy away from taking firm and forceful action to combat terrorism, including internationally. “We, among other measures, should uphold democracy, support each other’s democracies and make it a vehicle towards defeating terrorism.” Mr. Rajapaksa said that in the SAARC region, and in multi-lateral fora like the United Nations, there is agreement on a series of measures on how to combat terrorism in line with accepted universal values and standards and the time has come to re-dedicate ourselves to fully implement them (Hindu).

Items sent to civilians in uncleared areas have been looted by the LTTE over the years, the Defence Ministry said. The picture shows several such items found by troops of the 58 Division in the outskirts of Puthukkudiyiriuppu. Picture courtesy Army Media.

LTTE high-tech satellite communication facility captured - Troops of 58 Division who have advanced into the Puthukudiirippu town perimeter found an LTTE high-tech satellite communication center last Friday, military sources said. Troops advanced into the built-up area amidst stiff resistance by the terrorists, the sources said. Infantrymen of 10 Gajaba Regiment (10 GR) serving under 58 Division were able to locate the LTTE’s high-tech communication center with modern satellite relaying machines. It was located west of Puthukudiirippu area. Computers, computer accessories, switches, telephones which were believed to be used for international communication through satellite, were also found, the sources said. As troops encircled the LTTE’s last remaining stronghold, terrorists had to withdraw from the area leaving behind this high-tech facility used for international communication. Meanwhile, in fighting reported in north of Kombavil area, the LTTE suffered heavy damages, the sources said. Five bodies of terrorists killed in the fighting were recovered along with four T-56 weapons (Full report in Sunday Island).

LTTE suffers heavy setback in Mullaittivu battles - Army - The 55 Division troops positioned South of Chalai have advanced further South during since Friday evening gaining control over sections of the LTTE built earth bund at Puthumathalan. Troops had also seized two LTTE attack craft, military sources from the Mullaittivu battlefront reported. The LTTE boats had sustained damages due to military artillery attacks the sources said adding that LTTE’s boat wing chief Soosai, had commanded the LTTE in offering resistance. According to intercepted LTTE communication, 13 terrorists were killed during the confrontations and many others were wounded. Soosai had operated from an undisclosed location at Puthukkudiyirippu, blaming the LTTE ground leaders for failing to stall the military advance. "If they (Army) an inch further we are done for ever", he was quoted as saying through intercepted LTTE communication. Meanwhile, the multi-pronged military surge towards Puthukkudiyirippu town continue with increasing LTTE battlefield loses as troops are now reportedly positioned some 200 m from seizing control of Puthukkudiyirppu junction, the sources reported (Full report in Sunday Island).

Readying for the refugees - Whatever the debate on the numbers maybe, there’s no gainsaying that several thousand refugees are now trapped in the small sliver of territory the LTTE still controls in the Vanni. The figures vary depending on who presents them. Sir. John Holmes, the UNUnder Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, who was here a few days ago at the invitation of the government, in a briefing to the UN Security Council on Friday said that estimates on the number of civilians trapped in what he called a ``rapidly shrinking pocket of land’’ varied from the government’s 70,000 to the UN’s 200,000. LTTE propaganda, of course, has numbers as high as 300,000 or more. Whatever the actual numbers are, the country has to be prepared to meet a surge of refugees, unfortunates many times displaced as the fighting raged around them, as best as we can. These are Sri Lankan citizen, traumatized by many years of war and the tyranny of LTTE terrorism who risked being shot dead – as many actually were - as they fled to safety. Those of us living in areas outside the war zone owe these people the best we can do for them (Full Editorial in Sunday Island).

Troops foil Sea Tiger attack - Over 10 enemy boats destroyed - Fierce fighting erupted in Chalai area on Friday night and continued till yesterday morning as troops of the 55 Division under the command of Brigadier Prasanna Silva advanced further south of Chalai along the coastal belt and destroyed the Tiger defence line south of Chalai, military officials from the battleground said yesterday. The 55 Division troops also foiled a major Sea Tiger attack on the ground troops amidst heavy fighting that continued in Chalai. “More than 20 Tiger boats attempted to land in Chalai under the direct command of Sea Tiger leader Soosai. The attempt was effectively thwarted by the 55 Division troops destroying more than 10 of their boats”, the officials added. A suicide boat was also destroyed by the ground troops as it came towards the troops operating in the lagoon front. The ground troops foiled more than 15 counter attacks by the LTTE killing more than 20 of their cadres during the battle that continued till yesterday noon. Troops also suffered injuries as LTTE launched a massive assault on the ground troops advancing towards South of Chalai. According to military officials the LTTE is heavily resisting the Security Forces advancing to the South of Chalai as it would pave the way for the civilians trapped in the No Fire Zone to flee towards the Security Forces controlled areas (Sunday Observer).

Essentials to North via A-9 - Social Services Minister and the Jaffna district parliamentarian Douglas Devananda has taken the initiative to transport essential items like food, medicine and fuel to the Jaffna peninsula via A-9 highway which will be opened for military transportation from today. Minister Devananda told the Sunday Observer that he has already discussed the matter with the Advisor to the President Basil Rajapaksa MP who has taken up the issue positively. “Discussions with the Defence Secretary and the Commissioner of Essential Services will also be held to expedite the process, “Minister Devananda said. He also pointed out that when the highway had remained open for civilian transport during the ceasefire period between 2002 and 2006, civilians travelling between North and South had to face severe hardship due to extortion activities of the LTTE. “Following the closure of A-9 in 2006, the goods had to be transported by ship and there were inordinate delays. Even civilians had to travel between Jaffna and Colombo by air paying exorbitant fares. However with the beginning of military transportation this week, the signs are positive to resume civilian transportation with essentials reaching the peninsula without delay,” Minister Devananda added. Meanwhile the power supply to the entire Jaffna Peninsula will be made available twenty four hours of the day from this week, Electricity Department sources in the North said (Full report in Sunday Observer).

Lankan envoy says end child recruitment WASHINGTON, D.C. - As it becomes increasingly clear that the LTTE terrorist organisation continues to force children held hostage in the conflict zone onto the battlefield, the Ambassador for Sri Lanka to the United States, Jaliya Wickramasuriya, calls for the end to the manipulation and suffering of children. "It is alarming that the LTTE terrorists, are continuing their blatant pattern of recruiting children to serve their own political agendas. It is an intolerable practice and must be stopped. We are hopeful this new campaign with UNICEF will help end the manipulation and suffering of Sri Lankan children," he said. The Ambassador's comments coincided with the launch of a new media campaign with UNICEF and the Government of Sri Lanka. According to the UNICEF Web site, "Bring Back the Child" is a multimedia initiative directed towards armed groups, vulnerable communities and affected children. It is made possible by the financial support of the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and UNICEF France. From 2003 to the end of 2008, UNICEF has recorded over 6,000 cases of children recruited by the LTTE. "The image of Sri Lanka, for far too long, has been stained by the presence of child soldiers in country. But, more important than erasing the stain in our image, is the need to save children from the horror of terror, the most savage of the chosen weapons of terror, that has been the menace of our society for nearly three decades", said President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the launch of the Sri Lanka National Campaign Against the Recruitment of Children for use in Armed Conflict (Sunday Observer).

SAARC Ministers call for Pragmatic cooperation against terror Coordinated approach to economic crisis - The 31st session of the SAARC Council of Ministers reiterated their commitment in strengthening the SAARC and the global regime against terrorism and decided to establish a high level group of eminent experts to review and make proposals to further strengthen SAARC anti-terrorism mechanism, including pragmatic cooperation. The Inter-Summit Session of the SAARC Council of Ministers was held in Colombo from February 23 to 28. Minister of Foreign Affairs Rohitha Bogollagama speaking to the press on the outcome of SAARC 31st session of the Council of Ministers at Hotel Inter Continental yesterday briefed the media on the two declarations adopted at the end of the session by the SAARC Council of Ministers on Cooperation in Combating Terrorism and on dealing with the Global Economic Crisis. Briefing on the Declaration on `Cooperation in Combating Terrorism' Minister Bogollagama stated that the foreign ministers of member States of SAARC were deeply concerned about the continuing scourge of terrorism afflicting the region which has caused extensive social disharmony, loss of human life destruction and damage to property. The Declaration also assured its contribution towards the efforts in the UN General Assembly for the early adoption of the UN draft Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism. The Declaration also called for supporting promotion of cooperation and exchange of information, consistent with the respective domestic legal and administrative regimes, improving immigration and customs control measures to detect and prevent the international movement of terrorists and their accomplices and trafficking in arms, narcotics and psychotropic substances or other materials, intended to support terrorism (Full report in Sunday Observer).

France to provide humanitarian assistance - French Foreign Minister Dr. Bernard Kouchner said he was glad that the conflict in the North of Sri Lanka is coming to an end and inquired on how best humanitarian assistance could be extended by France. He also expressed concerns at the civilians being held hostage in the conflict area, when he contacted Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama over the telephone last week. Minister Bogollagama explained the manner in which the LTTE had been shifting the civilians as and when the areas were cleared from their hold, and at present being confined to a strip of land with the civilians being used as human shields. He also outlined the ICRC's support in the delivery of humanitarian services including the evacuation of the sick. The Minister also pointed out that the access of government agencies to the uncleared area had been hindered by the LTTE. On inquiry by the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister with regard to the envisaged humanitarian assistance from France, Minister Kouchner shared the possibility of making available the services of the French Red Cross. Minister Bogollagama said that such assistance would be useful and the two Ministers agreed to discuss the related modalities with regard to the French offer (Sunday Observer).

Wreckage of LTTE aircraft to turn into museum piece - The undamaged portion of the LTTE aircraft that was shot down by the airmen at Katunayake last week will be exhibited at the Air Force museum in Ratmalana. This was the first ever enemy plane to be gunned down by the Sri Lanka Air Force since its inception, according to Air Force spokesman Wing Commander, Janaka Nanayakkara. He told the Sunday Observer, that the two Czech-built Zlin-Z143 aircraft of the LTTE to hit targets in Colombo, did not return to their base safely as they did in the past. "The timely action with perfect air defence system had managed to bring down those two planes. The LTTE plane that had rammed into the Inland Revenue Dept. building opposite the SLAF headquarters, was shattered to pieces. Whereas the second plane which was brought down onto a marshy land at Katunayake, with little damage to its body. The SLAF men were able to recover the Tiger pilot's body. Once the investigations are over, the Tiger aircraft will be displayed at the SLAF museum in Ratmalana along with other exhibits", the spokesman added (Sunday Observer).

LTTE confined to underground bunkers - Exactly after two and half years of fighting since the Mavilaru operation the Security Forces have been able to confine the LTTE, the most ruthless terror outfit in the world to underground bunkers located in Puthukudiyiruppu, the last township under their control with troops successfully confining them to an area less than 50 square kilometres as of yesterday. With no sign of surrendering to the Security Forces even at the last leg of the battle, the LTTE is seemingly getting ready to make those underground bunkers their own graveyards as troops are fast moving into the centre of the Puthukudiyiruppu town despite heavy resistance of the LTTE. The LTTE is fighting tooth and nail in defending their final stronghold, seemingly expecting a miracle to happen even at the last moment before their certain defeat at the hands of the Security Forces. The troops are witnessing the fiercest battles they have ever faced in the battle front these days in Puthukudiyiruppu, as LTTE is exerting maximum pressure on them making use of their maximum fire power with their limited manpower available with them along with their top level leaders including Velupillai Prabhakaran who are still surviving inside underground bunkers (Full report in Sunday Observer).

Air Defence System: Mechanism that saved a thousand lives  - The Sri Lankan air defence system has a short history of only two years. Set up at the end of 2006 Sri Lanka Air Force's Air Defence System is a combination of different security networks. Following the successful mission of destroying the two LTTE suicide aircraft on February 20, an expert group of the SLAF speaks about the Air Defence System and its role. Following are some excerpts of the interview. Names of the Air Force officers cannot be given due to security reasons (Full report in Sunday Observer).

We can now give others a lesson or two - Air Force chief - Q: How do you explain the growth of the Sri Lanka Air Force since the ethnic war started in the country? A: We have come a long way. Especially, since 2006 we have been able to force the LTTE to a standstill, I would say. Mostly we operate in support of the advancing troops of the Sri Lanka Army and the Navy. We were able to weaken LTTE’s fire-power drastically in the recent past. Considering the past two to three years, we have largely improved especially in the areas of attacking power, weapons even in the internal management of the force. The Air Force which was relatively a small outfit has developed into a full-fledged fighting force during the last 58 years. As we are developing country we have our own limitations to expand. Yet, we have used our resources effectively and judiciously causing maximum damage to the enemy (Sunday Observer).

Heavy fighting at Chalai South: Troops advance through Puthumathalan Earth bund - Heavy fighting is continuing between troops of the 55 Div and LTTE in South of Chalai as troops successfully breached the LTTE forward defences and advanced across the Puthumathalan earth bund today (Feb 28) after hours of intense fighting that broke out since Friday(27) evening. According to latest battlefront reports, LTTE terrorists have continued directing 120mm heavy mortar and 122 artillery fire towards military, from positions identified well inside the declared 'No Fire Zone' at Mullaittivu. Troops while avoiding retaliatory fire, out maneuvered LTTE resistance fire pushing further into enemy territory, the sources further said. At least 13 terrorists were confirmed killed and twice as many reported injured during the confrontations that drew Soosai, Laxman and few other LTTE senior cadres from their jungle hideouts at Puthukkudiyirippu. According to intercepted LTTE communication these senior terrorists were continuously appealing the ground leaders to prolong the military advances at any cost fearing  a rapid fall of the rear LTTE defences. Earlier, on Friday troops thwarted an LTTE offensive attempt in the coast of Puthumathalan, reportedly destroying 4 LTTE attack craft also leaving scores of terrorists injured. The entire area is heavily mined by the LTTE what ground sources refer to as the only existing obstacle prolonging the military incursion. More information will follow (Full report and photos in Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

U.S. told: Mind your own business - In an open letter to Senator Robert Casey, Chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Middle East and South Asia, Sri Lankan expatriate Gemunu Lankathilake has told the committee to mind matters pertaining to America, instead of meddling in the affairs of other countries. Lankathilake has advised the committee not to fall for LTTE propaganda and pointed that some of the so-called innocent civilians trapped in the Tiger held areas are in fact a LTTE-trained civilian ‘volunteer’ force the members of which belong to the Tiger ‘heroes’ families. Most of these ‘heroes’ are suicide cadres who committed acts of terror. The civilian volunteer force provides the LTTE with logistical support in its battles with the Sri Lankan Security Forces. The figures of civilian deaths published by LTTE and pro-Tiger NGOs are not only highly exaggerated but a good number of the ‘victims’ are Tiger terrorists killed in battle. Lankathilake has reminded Senator Casey a fact he knows only too very well in the light of U.S. experience in Kosovo, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Palestine that to guarantee 100 percent safety of civilians in a conventional war is impossible. In a guerilla type-war that the LTTE has waged against the Sri Lankan State it is even worse. Yet the number of civilian deaths in the Sri Lankan conflict is far less than the U.S.-engineered conflicts in the Middle-East and Afghanistan, say Lakathilake. He stresses the need for Washington the need to help Sri Lanka to crush terrorism everywhere rather than pontificate on a exaggerated and distorted ‘civilian crisis.’ (Full report in Sinhela Net).

How to Kill Civilians in the Name of “Human Rights”: Lessons from Sri Lanka - By Michael Radu - Michael Radu, Ph.D., is Co-Chair of FPRI’s Center on Terrorism, Counter-Terrorism, and Homeland Security. His most recent book is The War on Terrorism: 21st-Century Perspectives (ed., with Stephen Gale and Harvey Sicherman, Transaction, 2008); his Europe’s Ghost: Tolerance, Jihadism and Their Consequences is forthcoming from Encounter Press. After a conflict of more than a quarter of a century of terrorism and civil war that killed 70,000 people, Sri Lankans finally think they have defeated the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), perhaps the world’s most murderous terrorist organization. Why and how a small country of 21 million succeeded in defeating such a group where much bigger powers have failed is a good lesson for those who study terrorism and counterinsurgency. These lessons are primarily political and legal, but also military and diplomatic, and they include both successes and pitfalls in a small country’s road to peace and development. Sri Lanka, an Indian Ocean country the size of West Virginia, has a diverse population—81 percent is Sinhalese, most of them Buddhist; some 11 percent are Tamils, who are generally Hindus, either immigrants from India or native. Eight percent of the population are Muslims. As is so often the case in the former British Empire, the native group most adept to Western education and adaptable to British interests—in this case the Tamils—were disproportionately represented among the educated at the time of independence (1948), and thus resented by the majority. Free elections repeatedly brought to power Sinhalese populists/socialists. Tamils were pushed aside and the majority language declared the only official one. The result was, and to some extent remains, Tamil resentment and demands for autonomy, at least in the northern (Jaffna) and Eastern (Trincomalee) areas where they predominate (Full report in Foreign Policy Research Institute).

Media Release of SLUNA (Canada) - U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN SRI LANKA – Hearing on February 24, 2009 Honourable Senators, We refer to the subject hearing held at the Senate Building with three pre-selected witnesses to ascertain the recent developments in Sri Lanka. At the very outset, we would like to point out that the lack of a representative of the country being inquired into is a serious lapse on the part of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee in reaching a reasonable assessment of the prevailing situation in that country. Nevertheless, we would like to express our appreciation for your concern about the developing situation in Sri Lanka and desire to be of assistance to the government and people of that country. Having listened to the hearing via the internet link, we would like to make the following observations in respect of the presentations made by the chosen witnesses: Hon. Jeffrey J. Lunstead (Former Ambassador to Sri Lanka): The ambassador’s assumption that abductions and disappearances of Tamil persons in Sri Lanka had been carried out by elements of the government, and that none had been prosecuted for these incidents is an irresponsible and inaccurate statement. The ambassador himself had submitted a list of 300 odd names of so called disappeared persons during his tenure in Sri Lanka, which included persons who had migrated to western countries, some debtors who were hiding from lenders, yet others who had secretly eloped with their lovers and stayed away from the public eye. The other short coming with the ambassador’s list, and several other lists compiled by various human rights and civic organizations, was that they did not contain any helpful data such as the last known movements of the said individuals other than their names, which made it extremely difficult for the Police department to follow up in the midst of their primary task of safeguarding the public at large from suicide bombers and bomb attacks in buses, trains and shopping centres by trained killers despatched to the capital city and other population centres by the Tamil Tiger Terrorists (Full Media Release in SPUR).

Gloves on at UN to beat mounting pressures of Tiger lobbies - By H. L. D. Mahindapala - (February 27 , Melbourne, Sri Lanka Guardian) Pressure is mounting at the UN to put the humanitarian crisis in Mullativu – the last outpost of the Tamil Tigers -- on the agenda of the Security Council. The objective is to get the Security Council to call for a ceasefire. Pro-Tiger NGOs and lobbies, and also the noted Mathew R. Lee, the only blogger given accreditation at UN, (more about him later) are button holing delegates and urging them to put Sri Lanka on the Security Council agenda at today’s meeting. Sri Lanka is waging a strenuous battle in the labyrinthine corridors of international power, to stave off any UN intervention or censure. Early in February Mexico, a new comer to the Security Council, asked the Council to be briefed on Sri Lanka. Russia stepped in and said that it would be improper. Russia, however, added that it could be raised at the General Assembly. The Japanese Ambassador, Ukio Takasi, the current President of the Security Council, also said earlier that “at the moment there is no strong request” for the Council to be briefed on the Sri Lankan issue, according to Mathew Lee who questioned Takasi. In any case, in early February the general consensus was to await the return of Sri John Holmes from his Sri Lankan tour. Even the British Ambassador to UN, John Sawers, did not back the Mexican delegate even though Britain was pressing Sri Lanka to accept Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s Browne as a special envoy to Sri Lanka (Full report in Sri Lanka Guardian).

U.N. Ambassadors unanimous LTTE laying down arms, releasing civilians to Sri Lanka government Sat, 2009-02-28 15:14 Daya Gamage – US National Correspondent Asian Tribune - United Nations, New York. 28 February (Asiantribune.com): At the conclusion of the U.S. Secretary General’s Special Representative for Humanitarian Affairs Sir. John Holms many ambassadors representing other countries were unanimous that the LTTE is now defeated and that it should lay down the arms and release all trapped civilians to move to Sri Lanka government declared safe zones. Here are some of the comments the ambassadors provided to the press corps after the Security Council session that discussed Sri Lanka: The Russian Ambassador Vitaly I. Churkin was categorical in saying that the today’s briefing is a onetime affair and that it will not go beyond that. This is an internal situation against a terrorist group which the Government is trying to handle through military and political means. Observers say that the LTTE lobbyist’s attempt to get UN Security Council to give them further breathing space through a ceasefire failed to materialize. The LTTE has only to blame itself for holding civilians hostage and shooting the very people who were trying to flee to freedom. The Government on the other hand seems to have scored by expanding its cooperation and assistance through the UN, ICRC and by the action of the armed forces who took extraordinary measures of restraint and precaution to minimize civilian casualties while taking more casualties among its ranks (Full report in Asian Tribune).

LTTE’s Hi-Tech Com Centre Found - MULLAITTIVU: A HI-TECH COMMUNICATION CENTER possessed by the LTTE terrorists was found by the 58 Division troops from AMPALAVANPOKKANAI, in the northwest of PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU, Friday (27) afternoon. Troops found modern communication and television transmitting equipment damaged and scattered all over the premises installed with satellite antennas and powered by soundproof powerful electricity generators. It was all evident that terrorists had been using this place for their clandestine terrorist activities until they abandoned the area a few days ago. Meanwhile, two large sea craft used by Sea Tigers were also found by the 58 Division troops from the same area the same day. The boats had been brought to the land and kept in the jungle. In the meantime, troops of the same Division had fierce gun battle with terrorists in PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU area Friday (27) inflicting heavy casualties among the terrorists. Soldiers after confrontations recovered nine dead bodies of LTTE terrorists and three T-56 weapons. A few soldiers sustained injuries in fighting. The same day, troops of the Task Force-III and Task Force-V operating in OLUMADU and MULLIKULAM areas respectively found one 81 mm IED (Improvised Explosive Device) and twelve anti personnel mines (Sri Lanka army).

LTTE face heavy setback in Mullaittivu battles: scores killed, 2 LTTE attack craft damaged - The 55 Division troops positioned South of Chalai have advanced further South during an intense assault launched since yesterday evening (Feb 27), reportedly gaining control over sections of the LTTE built earth bund at Puthumathalan, also seizing 2 LTTE attack craft, military sources from the Mullaittivu battlefront reported. The 2 LTTE boats have sustained damages due to military artillery attacks the sources said adding that LTTE's boat wing chief Soosai, have commanded the terrorist resistances. According to intercepted LTTE communication, 13 terrorists were killed during the confrontations and many were left wounded. Soosai had operated from an undisclosed location in Puthukkudiyirippu, lambasting at the LTTE ground leaders for failing to stall the military advance. "If they (Army) inch further we are done for ever", he was quoted as saying through intercepted LTTE communication. Meanwhile, the multi-pronged military surge towards Puthukkudiyirippu town continue with increasing LTTE battlefield loses as troops are now reportedly positioned some 200m from the seizing control over the Puthukkudiyirppu junction, ground sources further reported (Full report and photos in Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

LTTE high-tech satellite communication center captured - west of Puthukudiirippu  - Troops of 58 Division who have entered in to Puthukudiirippu town perimeter have found LTTE's high-tech satellite communication center yesterday, 27 February, while further advancing into the built-up area amidst stiff resistance of terrorists, military sources said. Infantrymen of 10 Gajaba Regiment (10 GR) serving under 58 Division were able to located the LTTE's high-tech communication center having modern satellite relaying machines. It was located at west of Puthukudiirippu area. Computers, computer accessories, switches, telephones which were believed to be used for international communication through satellite were also found from the scene, military sources said. As troops encircled the LTTE's last remaining stronghold, Puthukudiirippu, terrorists had to withdraw from the area leaving behind this high-tech satellite relaying machines used for international communication. Meanwhile, in fighting reported in north of Kombavil area LTTE terrorists suffered heavy damages, military sources said. 5 bodies of LTTE terrorists killed in hours long fighting were recovered along with 4 x T-56 weapons (Full report and photos in Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

Other nations Could Learn from Sri Lanka Navy’s Fight Against the Tamil Tigers - Tim Fish, IHS Jane’s maritime reporter - London (27th February 2009) – Tim Fish, IHS Jane’s maritime reporter, visited Sri Lanka in January to examine the Sri Lanka Navy’s contribution to the defeat by government forces of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) – a contribution that has been almost completely ignored by western media outlets. In a feature for Jane’s Navy International, Tim Fish reports: “ Bringing the conflict to a conclusion after 30 years of war would not have been possible without the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN)”. In order to counter the LTTE and its Sea Tiger cadres, the SLN developed three categories of small craft and associated warfighting tactics as part of a Small Boats Concept, which was a major turning point in the progress of the war against the separatist organisation. The Small Boats Concept effectively copied the Sea Tigers’ asymmetric tactics, but on a much larger scale. With rudimentary shipbuilding facilities, Sri Lanka manufactured 150 or more of these small Inshore Patrol Craft (IPCs) and employed them in infantry-style tactics to gain the ascendancy over swarms of Sea Tiger attack craft and suicide boats. However, as well as operating in littoral waters, the SLN proved that it could also take the fight to the LTTE far over the horizon, sinking eight warehouse ships up to 2,000 n miles from Sri Lanka (Full report in Janes review).

LTTE must lay down arms: No ceasefire call to Sri Lanka - consensus at UN Security Council "Influence Tigers to let civilians go" - Sir John Holmes: Sri Lanka not on UNSC Agenda UN Security Council yesterday (27) received a briefing by Under Secretary General Sir John Holmes who visited Sri Lanka at President Rajapaksa's invitation last week. The briefing did not result in a ceasefire call to Sri Lanka from the Security Council, but general agreement that the LTTE must lay down arms and ease suffering of civilians. At the end of the briefing Sir John Holmes told reporters that humanitarian concerns about the people held captive by the LTTE remains a major concern while the concerns about IDPs who have already come to cleared areas seems less than what was feared for. He was strongly critical of the LTTE's continuing ruthlessness by not allowing people to leave the conflict area. Sir John had good words about increasing cooperation with the government and made positive comments about the Government's policy and objective to send back about 80 percent of IDPs as soon as possible or within a year. He was strongly critical of the LTTE's continuing ruthlessness by not allowing people to leave the conflict area. Sir John appealed to "all those with any influence on the position of the Tigers to use that influence to force them to let the civilians go". "There is no time to lose" he said (Full report in Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

PRO-LTTE SELF IMMOLATION FAILS IN LONDON FOR THE SECOND TIME - By Walter Jayawardhana - An attempt by a suspected pro- LTTE man to commit suicide as a protest ended up unsuccessfully for the second time in London when he had to be admitted to a hospital with “superficial” burns with his condition described as “not critical” on Friday. The London Metropolitan Police said he was on fire for “a short time” just out side the British parliament in Parliament Square in Central London . It is suspected he was attempting for a self-immolation as a protest against the Sri Lankan security forces who are on the verge of defeating the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam ( LTTE) terrorist group in the Northern jungles of Sri Lanka. A police spokesman said, “At approx 16.00 on Fri. 27 February a man was seen alight in Parliament Square SW1. Police officers came to his aid and the fire was extinguished. The 43 yr old was taken to a south London hospital - it is thought he may have suffered superficial burns and his condition is certainly NOT critical.” On February 14, when more than 5000 Sri Lankans were demonstrating in front of the official residence of Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street against the terrorist group another pro-LTTE man attempted to burn himself by pouring an alleged fuel on his body but the police arrested him and is in the remand jail. Days before that another suspected pro-LTTE man poured gasoline on his body and ignited him to death in Geneva , Switzerland. All are British residents. Suicides are rampant among Tamils and the LTTE is a leading group who practices suicide bombing as a political weapon mostly against civilians. (EOM).

LTTE area leader killed Battle intensifies to capture Tiger’s last stronghold: - The battle to capture Puthukudiyiruppu, the LTTE’s last stronghold has intensified. Security Forces marched into LTTE’s highly fortified defence lines amidst stiff resistance killing scores of LTTE cadres including an area leader on Thursday. According to military officials, troops of the 53, 58 and 59 divisions and Task Force II and Task Force IV continued to fight to liberate the remaining LTTE stronghold in Mullaitivu district yesterday. Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said troops of 1 Gajaba Regiment and 4 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment on 681 Brigade engaged in a fierce battle that lasted hours in the general area of Puthukudiyiruppu pushing the LTTE further back into their build-up amidst stiff resistance by Tiger cadres on Thursday. He said the Tigers lost one of their ground commanders in the Puthukidiyiruppu battlefield. “An LTTE ground commander known as Shankar who led the confrontation in Puthukudiyiruppu area was killed. LTTE transmissions confirmed that 14 Tigers were killed and over 30 wounded during the clash,” he added. Brigadier Nanayakkara said troops confronting in general areas of Ampalawanpokkani, Mulliavalai, east of Puthukudiyiruppu, Chalai and Therumurikkandi plunged further into the LTTE build-up also inflicting heavy damages to Tiger cadres. MIA in the USA An Oscar for a Bin Laden next?: A few hours ago, two aircraft flown by a terrorist group, LTTE, recognised as such by the US, were foiled in their attempt to attack the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo. Though both planes were shot down, two civilians were killed and 46 others injured. In an article in the New Yorker, (Jane Mayer, ‘The Hard Cases,’ New Yorker, 2/23/09), argues that the Obama administration faces the tough choice of closing Guantanamo Bay and other detention centers holding so called enemy combatants who have never been charged with a crime, and being accused of going easy on future terrorists (Full report in Daily News).

Barking up the wrong tree! - The government and the UNICEF have launched a much advertised national campaign to prevent child recruitment and to promote the release of all recruited children. Helping those hapless children is, no doubt, a noble effort which deserves praise from one and all. But, do we need such a grandiose project costing the UN an arm and a leg to put the kibosh on this dastardly practice and bring child recruiters to book? Child conscription is not a scourge like environment pollution or dengue, the tackling of which requires a sustained campaign to heighten public awareness. What is needed to eliminate child recruitment is only a determined effort to take on child recruiters with might and main. There are only two groups responsible for child conscription in this country – the LTTE and its offshoot the TMVP. The latter has joined forces with the government and the former is about to be crushed. All that needs to be done to secure the release of the unfortunate children in their clutches is for the government to force the TMVP to let go of children in its ranks and to stamp out the LTTE terrorism fast. There is no other way. All these years the UNICEF has been barking up the wrong tree as regards Sri Lanka's child combatants. It always sought the help of the LTTE to secure their release. The UNICEF even launched a joint project with the LTTE for that purpose by setting up transit homes. The LTTE promised to release child soldiers in batches for rehabilitation. But, we warned the UNICEF that the LTTE was taking it for a right royal ride. That project came a cropper and the UNICEF had egg on its face (Full Editorial in Island).

A talk of apples and oranges - by C. Wijeyawickrema - In his essay, "LTTE versus Democracy," (the Island, 2/26/2009), Mr. Izeth Hussain (IH) is mixing apples with oranges, and in the process ignores the importance of several other key variables that brought an end to Tamil terrorism in Sri Lanka. He forgets that in Nepal there was no separatist war. It was like the JVP in 1971 or in 1989, except that JVP killed the poorest, bus drivers and policemen. In 1971, if they kidnapped SPs or ASPs, policemen would have supported JVP. Neither can IH talk about Vietnam or Algeria. These two were cases of wars against French colonialism. In Vietnam, America took the burden from the French. India cannot do a "Bangladesh thing" or a Bhutan or Sikkim thing in Sri Lanka because it is an island. Nepal depends on Indian overland road for outside contacts, including import of essential items. Nepal rebels would end up starving if they angered India! On the other hand Sri Lankan president was able to neutralize India and USA both by using his Ruhunu brain! He could get Iran, China, Pakistan, Russia, all on board (Full report in Island).

Brighter future for children - One of the most heartbreaking scenes that emerged from the battlefronts in the North and the East for the last several decades is the child soldier, carrying a heavy weapon that he or she can hardly hold. This is perhaps the greatest disservice that the LTTE has done to the Tamil community, which it ironically claims to 'liberate'. The LTTE is among the several terrorist groups worldwide that conscript children, both male and female, for combat duties. Some of them are as young as eight years old. The Tigers simply rob them of their childhood, their innocence and their education to turn them into merciless killing machines. The Tigers' modus operandi is simple - they force families to give at least one child to the organisation or else they all face death. In desperation, they have been recruiting more than one child from each family in recent weeks. These children are mostly used as cannon fodder at the battlefront, with older, better trained cadres hiding behind them. Evidence has also recently emerged that Tigers had trained children for the most abhorrent mission of them all - suicide bombings. From time to time, the Tigers had assured the international community including the UN that it was giving up this repulsive practice, only to go back on their word. International human rights groups have accused the LTTE of keeping thousands of children as combatants. These children are subjected to cruel and degrading treatment, hardly fed properly and brainwashed endlessly (Full Editorial in Daily News)..

Address by HE President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the launch of the Sri Lanka National Campaign against the Recruitment of Children for Use in Armed Conflict - Presidential Secretariat, Colombo February 26th 2009. Distinguished Guests Ladies and Gentlemen We meet today to launch an important campaign, one of the most important campaigns for the future of our society. There are many who would say that this should have been launched earlier. But, even at this late stage this is something we owe to our children, who will be our future, and for whom we must be ready to make the biggest sacrifices. Today we launch the Sri Lanka National Campaign Against the Recruitment of Children for Use in Armed Conflict. The image of Sri Lanka, for far too long, has been stained by the presence of Child Soldiers in our country. We have been disgraced by being banded with other countries where this dreadful practice exists, and it is time for us to erase that stain on our country and nation. A stain that has not come through official policy, but through the acts of those who use terror against the state. But, more important than erasing the stain in our image, is the need to save our children from this special horror of terror, the most savage of the chosen weapons of terror, that has been the menace of our society for nearly three decades (Full report in Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

Terrorism & Global Financial meltdown: twin challenges before SAARC today - President - "We need to re-double our efforts to combat this menace individually and collectively. We cannot shy away from taking firm and forceful action to combat terrorism, including internationally..... The instability caused by [the global financial] crisis can be considered quite similar to the threat caused by terrorism to our societies and to our region. The effects of synchronised slow-down in developed economies, can reach us sooner than later. And, as the crisis deepens in the developed world, it is likely that protectionist sentiments can spread and even take root." said President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing the SAARC Foreign Ministers Conference in Colombo today. President Rajapaksa said: "Our societies bear the brunt of the evil force of terrorism. But, we cannot and should not allow even a single citizen of South Asia to suffer as a result of the brutal violence un-leashed by terrorists. Therefore, we need to re-double our efforts to combat this menace individually and collectively. We cannot shy away from taking firm and forceful action to combat terrorism, including internationally. We, among other measures, should uphold democracy, support each other's democracies and make it a vehicle towards defeating terrorism." (Full report in Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

Navy rescues 59 Tamil Civilians fleeing from LTTE Clutches in the North-eastern Seas - Sri Lanka Navy rescued 59 Tamil civilians who were fleeing from the LTTE clutches in five fiber glass dinghies on the 26th February 2009 in the North-eastern seas. The group consisting of 42 adults (21 males and 21 females) and 17 children was struggling in the perilous sea waving white flags to draw the Navy’s attention when the Naval vessels came to their rescue around 08.30 a.m. The group was found exhausted and fatigued and was stricken with fear due to the exposure to terror at the hands of a merciless terrorist outfit gone berserk with an imminent defeat. All were safely brought ashore at the Munai beach area and provided with much-needed food and refreshments. Those who were found sick and weary were provided with immediate treatment by the Naval medical personnel. The rescued expressed their heart-felt gratitude to the Navy for the warm hospitality and care extended to them by the friendly naval personnel. They claimed that they feel indeed lucky to have been able to escape from the terror reigning un-cleared areas. Sri Lanka Navy has made special arrangements to assist innocent Tamil civilians fleeing from the LTTE clutches. Naval personnel and vessels along with stand-by rescue and medical teams are on special deployment for this humanitarian assistance mission in the North-eastern seas (Full report and photos in Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

Prabha’s Luxurious Swimming Pool in Army Hands - MULLAITTIVU: LUXURY at its best was seen by 58 Division troops, now advancing towards the PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU town center when they stumbled across a twenty-five meter long swimming pool, believed to have been enjoyed by Tiger supremo, PRABHAKARAN and his selected confidantes. The entire swimming pool covered with a roof – top of tin sheets was guarded by two comfortable underground bunkers. The discovery made from the west of PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU re-affirmed the fact that PRABHAKARAN and his cohorts, hiding inside dense jungles have had a very comfortable life while taking cover inside the spacious bunker – type underground house that stood by the swimming pool. Terrorists appeared to have abandoned the location, a few days before the troops moved in (Sri Lanka army)..

The media Center for National Security said , that he was taken in for questioning regarding the kamikaze style air raid by the Tamil Tigers on Colombo, February 20. The two aircraft were shot down by defence forces before the suicide fliers could do much damage. The Media Center said the release of the editor will depend on the outcome arising from his interrogation. (eom).

ANYTHING LIKE PROTESTS IN TAMIL NADU IS NOT GOING TO SAVE LTTE WHO ARE DOOMED TO DEFEAT SAYS ECONOMIST - By Walter Jayawardhana - Referring to the recent protests in Tamil Nadu the Economist magazine said that nothing is going to save the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) from defeat and New Delhi has quietly backed Sri Lanka’s President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his two year effort to wipe out Tigers. In its latest edition the Economist said, “The recent suicides will not save Sri Lanka’s rebels, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), who for 25 years have fought for an Eelam, or homeland, for Sri Lanka’s Tamils. Their embattled scrap of Northern Sri Lanka is shrinking fast. Nor will the fiery protests in India do much for thousands of civilians held hostage by the LTTE. India’s government, a coalition led by the Congress party, has quietly backed Sri Lanka’s president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, in his two-year effort to wipe out the Tigers.” The magazine added, “One reason is personal: Congress’s leader, Sonia Gandhi, lost her husband, Rajiv, a former prime minister, to an LTTE suicide-bomber in Tamil Nadu in 1991 .”The magazine called the concern of Tamil Nadu politicians for Sri Lankan Tamils flimsy. In the state’s increasingly fractured field, electoral alliances are more important than any issue—especially one that has not swayed an election for decades, if ever. The DMK sponsored the protest during which, the Economist said, a protester lit himself up. “Yet by championing the Sri Lankan cause, Mr Karunanidhi may in fact be most keen to deflect attention from nearer troubles. In one of India’s more industrialized states, the economic slowdown is hurting, with thousands of jobs lost in textiles, computer services and car-making. Mr Karunanidhi’s efforts to implant his relatives into government, including his son and anointed successor, M.K. Stalin, are also unpopular. In addition, the ailing leader no doubt hopes to outflank his main rival, a former film starlet and chief minister, J. Jayalalitha, who leads the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIDMK) party. A Brahmin in a mostly low-caste polity, Ms Jayalalitha is as nationalist as she is regionalist, and a fierce critic of the Tigers. “The danger for Mr Karunanidhi is that Congress might drop him for Ms Jayalalitha. A former ally of the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, she is no friend to Mrs Gandhi. Yet, following the usual anti-incumbency logic, her prospects appear to be improving as the DMK’s decline. She has urged Congress to withdraw its support for the DMK government in Tamil Nadu, and to consider forming a general-election alliance with the AIDMK. “Congress leaders in Tamil Nadu like the idea. But, for now, Mrs Gandhi does not. A Congress-AIDMK pact would risk uniting the pro-Tiger parties behind the rebels’ sometime champion, the DMK. Perhaps only then could the Sri Lankan issue greatly shape the election’s outcome. Moreover, Ms Jayalalitha is an irascible ally, whom Congress, previously bitten, is twice shy of befriending—until after the election, that is, should she do especially well in it.” (EOM).

LTTE suicide bomb factory, Soosai's bunker captured - west of Puthukkudiyiruppu

(Click here for details and photos)

Soosai’s hideout captured LTTE suicide bomb factory, swimming pool found: - Security Forces in their advance to liberate the last LTTE bastion of Puthukudiyiruppu have captured in clashes on Wednesday Sea Tiger Leader Soosai’s hideout, a suicide bomb factory and a swimming pool used by the LTTE leadership. Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said troops of the 58 division after prolonged offensive attacks west of Puthukudiyiruppu captured LTTE sea Tiger leader Soosai’s hideout and a suicide bomb factory following fierce battles that erupted on Wednesday. The Sinha Regiment (7 SLSR) attached to the 58 division under the command of Brigadier Shavendra Silva had captured Puthukudiyiruppu west. “It is believed that the Tigers used the location as a manufacturing yard for suicide bombs, claymore mines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs),” Brigadier Nanayakkara added. He said adjoining to the bomb manufacturing yard troops of the 10 Gajaba Regiment (10GR) and 12 GR captured the LTTE Sea Tiger Leader Soosai’s bunker. “The bunker was severely damaged due to aerial bombing earlier. Out Boat Motors and many other equipment used by the Sea Tiger cadres were also found in the vicinity,” he added. Troops of the 9th Gemunu Watch (9 GW) and 6 GW captured an LTTE swimming pool and its surrounding fortifications following intense fighting that lasted several hours on Wednesday,” Brigadier Nanayakkara said. He said the swimming pool was 50 feet long and 30 feet wide with its deep end over 7 feet in depth. It was concealed by nets and canopies to avoid aerial surveillance. “Existence of Cabana type cottages in the vicinity signifies that the high profile LTTE leaders frequented this location,” he added. The fast shrinking LTTE area in Mullaitivu is now confined to 58 sq kms as troops have surrounded the LTTE’s last stronghold, the Puthukkudiyiruppu township (Daily News).

‘Bring Back the Child’: UNICEF and Sri Lanka launch media campaign on child soldiers - As the star cricketer on his school team, Sitha would always count the days until Saturday and the morning of his next match. It was his weekly moment of glory, a time when all the other boys in his village in northern Sri Lanka came to watch him take out his bat, put on his cricket helmet and stride to the wicket. But on one particular Saturday, as he slid his helmet on, tears rolled down his face. A year earlier Sitha, had been abducted by an armed group. He was taken to a camp where he and other children were forced to train with weapons and shown how to plant landmines. As part of the training, Sitha he wore battle fatigues and a military helmet. His cricketing days were seemingly over. At the age of just 12, he was a child soldier (Full Press Release in UNICEF).

Menik farm welfare center of the Internally Displaced Persons Source: Government of Sri Lanka - The Menik Farm Welfare Center in the Wanni , is being constructed by the Sri Lankan Government to accommodate the Internally Displaced Person's (IDP's) who were detained forcibly by the LTTE to be used as "human shields". The AIADMK General Secretary Ms Jayalaitha Jayaram alleged recently that the LTTE was "using the Tamils as a shield in the war against the Sri Lanka Army" ("The Hindu", 18th February). The IDP's hade been detained as the last resort by the LTTE to prevent the rapidly advancing Security Forces conducting "humanitarian" operations to eliminate terrorism from Sri Lanka. They had escaped carrying their children and whatever they could carry with to enter the Government controlled areas risking their lives as well as of their children. The Welfare Centre consists of a total of 565 houses with another 150 being in the process of being urgently constructed to complete the first phase of the giant project to accommodate over 30,000 families that are expected to arrive in the Wanni. Twelve more such projects are planned with 2754 houses in 1000 acres of land which is being cleared and prepared for construction work now underway. Some among the arrival have been injured as they have been fired at by the LTTE to prevent them escaping into Government controlled territory. According to the Government Agent of Vavuniya, Ms P.S.M. Charles the people are happy to be in the Menik Farm Welfare Center as they are assured of protection provided by the Security Forces. According to media reports she said "the safety of the IDP's was assured: and had "justified the presence" of the military . The essential items of food, clothing have been provided BY THE Government with water, medical and toilet facilities. The project is supported by some Non- Governmental Organizations who have provided the children with educational opportunities with qualified staff. There are also banking and shopping facilities with plenty of fresh vegetables (Relief Web).

Child conscription must stop - President - While assuring that terrorism would be eradicated, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that his Government has taken simultaneous action to fight and free children from being robots of terror. President Rajapaksa made this observation when he addressed the launching ceremony of the Sri Lanka National Campaign against the Recruitment of Children for Use in Armed Conflict, under the theme, ‘Bring Back the Child’, at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday. The national campaign targeted at armed groups, vulnerable communities and the children affected, to prevent any future child recruitment and promote the release of children recruited already, had been launched jointly by President Rajapaksa and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). “I call upon all Sri Lankans to join in this cause, to be part of this campaign, to make your voices heard and your peaceful and determined actions seen the world over, as we seek to liberate the future of our land, and to free our children from having to carry arms for anyone, in any conflict, anywhere,” the President said. President Rajapaksa noted that it was high time the stigma of ‘Child Conscription’ which tarnished the country’s good image was erased, and our children were saved from the horror of terror which had plagued the country during the last three decades. He pointed out that although the Government never trusted the perpetrators of this heinous crime, there had been others who had even entered into agreements with them. “It is only later they realized that any agreements with them was not even worth the paper it was signed on,” he added (Full report in Daily News).

More doctors go North - The Government Medical Officers’ Association said there were 227 doctors serving in welfare camps and hospitals in the North, East and North-Eastern provinces. They had completed their internship this year and volunteered to serve in Trincomalee, Polonnaruwa, Vavuniya and Mannar. Spokesman for the GMOA Dr. Upul Gunasekara said ten more doctors would leave from the South for Vavuniya today (27). The doctors are being deployed to the North on a roster basis, he said. "We are providing our fullest support to assist internally displaced persons arriving in Vavuniya," he said. The Coordinating Centre set up by the GMOA last week has been synchronizing its services with assistance from the Health Ministry, the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Defense (MOD). The MOD is providing the necessary clearance and security for doctors going up North while the Health. Ministry has mainly been assisting with food and lodging. The WHO has assisted in providing transport for doctors and other medical staff. Dr. Gunasekara said they had received over two million rupees worth of drugs and medical equipment from private pharmaceutical companies which would be handed over to the welfare camps and the hospital in Vavuniya and Mannar next week. "These are also our people, and right now they need our support more than anything," he said (Island).

Sudar Oli Editor under arrest Reports of abduction false: Government Spokesman and Media and Information Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa yesterday said Sudar Oli Editor N. Vidyatharan was taken into police custody for questioning over a telephone conversation with regard to the LTTE’s abortive air raid on Colombo on February 20. He is alleged to have helped the LTTE in its suicide air mission. He was arrested on information received by the CID that his telephone had been used to make a call to the LTTE in connection with this attack. Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa also said that at the time of his arrest the police was unaware that he was an Editor. If he has committed any offence, legal action will be taken against him and if not he would be released, the Minister added. He also said that there is no truth whatsoever in statements that said that the Editor was abducted. Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said that the arrested Editor is being questioned by the Special Investigations Unit of the Colombo Police (Daily News).

Ceylinco Chief remanded Warrant on Deputy - Mount Lavinia Magistrate Harsha Setunga yesterday ordered the remand of Ceylinco Group Chairman Lalith Kotelawala until March 11 in connection with the alleged Golden Key Credit Card fraud running into Rs. 26 billion. The Magistrate also issued an arrest warrant on Deputy Chairman Cecile Kotelawala who is receiving treatment in a Singapore hospital and also instructed the Customs authorities to apprehend the suspect on arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport. In addition Nandani Kumari, Private Secretary of the CEO of Golden Key Credit Card Co. Kavan Perera was also remanded by the Magistrate who also further remanded the six suspects already being held in remand till March 11. They are CEO Kavan Perera, Finance Manager Saumya Karunaratne, and directors Niranjan Fernando, Saradha Sumanasekera, Mahinda Jayalath and M.N. Tuan. Over 2,000 Golden Key Credit Card depositors were present at the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court yesterday. They broke into applause when the Magistrate ordered the remand of Lalith Kotelawala. The Deputy Solicitor General told Court that Kotelawala had used the money of the Golden Credit depositors to set up a card company in Australia whilst also diverting part of this money to various welfare funds operated by him. The Deputy Solicitor General said there is evidence to show that Cecile Kotelawala had used depositors’ money for her foreign trips and that she should be named as a suspect. The Magistrate rejected an appeal for bail made by the suspect’s lawyers and put off hearings for March 31 (Daily News).

Prabhakaran cornered Last battle has begun - The battle to capture the final township under Tiger control is now on with Security Forces advancing into the Puthukuduyiruppu town area with all Tiger leaders making desperate attempts using their maximum resources and man power to stop the troops advance into Puthukuduyiruppu and Iranapalai areas. In other words the troops have reached the doorstep of Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran’s hideout by this time as his second in command and the Intelligence Wing Chief Pottu Amman who had never heard commanding the Tiger cadres in the battle front had come to the front to command Tiger cadres in the front lines. The 58 Division troops commanded by Brigadier Shavendra Silva have heard the voice of Pottu Amman over communication sets commanding the Tiger cadres on Wednesday evening as fierce battles raged in the area with troops inching towards the city centre amid heavy resistance of the LTTE (Full report in Daily News).

NFF for intensifying operations - The ongoing military operation should be intensified to eliminate the LTTE confined to 50 square kilometres in Mullaitivu and liberate innocent Tamil civilians who are kept as human shields by the LTTE, National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa said yesterday. He said International Organisations and countries are asking the Sri Lankan Government and the LTTE to temporarily stop the war and to allow innocent civilians into cleared areas. Addressing the media at the NFF Head Office, MP Weerawansa said even if the military operation was stopped the LTTE will never allow the innocent civilians into cleared areas. He said nearly 30,000 innocent Tamil civilians have fled to the cleared areas amidst LTTE attacks. Weerawansa said when the military operation intensifies innocent civilians will flee from the trap of the LTTE. He noted that militarily defeating the LTTE is the only mean to liberate the innocent Tamil civilians. The ICRC is conducting a ferry service to transport civilians from uncleared areas but the ferry services must be subjected to a thorough search to stop the terrorists from escaping. The Government will submit the Electricity Amendment Bill in Parliament on March 3, NFF Parliamentarian Piyasiri Wijenayake said yesterday. He said Karu Jayasooriya submitted this Bill during the UNP regime in favour of privatising the Electricity Board. Through the submitting the Bill, the UNP tried to hand over the production, transmitting and distribution of electricity to private sector, Wijenayake added. MP Wijenayake noted that with public assistance they could protect the Electricity Board from being privatised. He said the NFF brought this issue to the Government's notice and the Government unanimously agreed to keep the production, transmitting and the distribution authority with the Government, Wijenayake added (Daily News).

France expresses interest to provide humanitarian help - During a telephone conversation with Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama yesterday, French Foreign Minister Dr. Bernard Kouchner expressed his happiness at the conflict in the North coming to an end and inquired on how best humanitarian assistance could be extended by France. He also expressed concerns at the civilians being held hostage in the conflict area. On inquiry by Minister Bogollagama with regard to the envisaged humanitarian assistance from France, Minister Kouchner shared the possibility of making available the services of the French Red Cross. Minister Bogollagama said such assistance would be useful and the two Ministers agreed to further discuss the related modalities with regard to the French offer (Daily News).

LTTE versus Democracy - by Izeth Hussain - In my article Lasantha and Democracy in The Island of January 21 I argued that the LTTE is loosing the war because it practises dictatorship while the Government is relatively democratic, which fits in with the fact that in the modern era wars are invariably won by the more democratic side. I argued further that the explanation for what looks like an invariant law might be found in the fact that dictatorship usually goes with a weakened grasp of reality. I have just come across excellent illustrative material to buttress my argument in Kumar David’s article The National Question: What next in the Sunday Island of February 15. He quotes from a paper entitled Alternative Conflict Resolution – the Case of Nepal by Dr S.Chandrasekeran, a retired senior officer of the Indian intelligence, which had been posted some days earlier on the website South Asia Analysis Group. The paper addressed the question why armed insurrection succeeded in Nepal whereas it failed in the case of the LTTE in Sri Lanka. The answer given was that the LTTE sought a purely military solution whereas the Nepali Maoists sought a political solution while waging their guerilla struggle. The answer is certainly a plausible one, indeed a valid one, but the material quoted from Chandrasekeran’s paper can equally support the hypothesis that the Maoists won because unlike the LTTE they were democratic and therefore prevailed against Nepal’s dictatorial monarchy (Full report in Island).

TID grill FMM chief - Convener of the Free Media Movement Sunanda Deshapriya questioned by the Terrorist Investigation Division yesterday yesterday rejected a statement made by one Prakash arrested by Police at the Katunayake International Airport last week. Prakash, a one-time Batticaloa based journalist, had arrived at the Airport to catch a flight to Singapore when he was arrested on suspicion and had said that he was a journalist and had shown an international journalist identity card. He had claimed that he was a good friend of Sunanda Deshapriya. However the latter when questioned by the Police denied any knowledge of the suspect arrested. Further inquiries had revealed that Prakash was suspected to have cheated several people in East Sri Lanka to part with large sums of money on the promise of migration to Western countries and had attempted to escape to Singapore when arrested. Subsequent investigations had revealed that the international journalist identity card produced by the suspect was a forgery. The suspect is now being held in custody under detention orders for further questioning by the TID (Island).

Tigers, toads and twerps - We have in this country some kind of toads (gembas) which love to live indoor. Even if they are swept out, they land facing the houses where they have lived. Humans are also said to have animalistic traits. They have foxes and lions among them. Similarly, there are gembas in the diplomatic community. These ambassadorial gembas cannot wean themselves from Sri Lankan affairs even after they retire. Former US Ambassador in Colombo Jeffrey Lunstead giving evidence before a US Senate Sub Committee on Sri Lanka the other day proposed that donors slap tough aid conditions on Sri Lanka to make her capitulate to the diktats of the international community in resolving her conflict. A few weeks ago, some other ex-US envoys who had served here issued a statement severely critical of Sri Lanka thus lending their voice to the terrorist lobby working overtime to bail out the LTTE. Even a child with a decent education will find gaping holes in Lunstead's presentation to the Senate Sub Committee. His arguments are not backed by facts and he must have been swayed by the INGO fraternity pulling for the separatists. The less said about the Human Rights Watch submissions, the better. We only hope that the US Senate will do its own research without going by hearsay in drawing conclusions on the situation in Sri Lanka (Full Editorial in Island).

Is CBK devoid of shame? - Congratulations on your editorial titled, How failed leaders could serve the nation on Wednesday. On behalf of the public we need to thank you for it. In any other country when the integrity of the country is in peril all parties co-operate, whether they are opposed to the government, but not in ours. It just goes to prove not only what the Buddha said, "By birth are you not a noble person or an untouchable but by deed are you an untouchable or a noble person". Chandrika has not only let herself down but also her parents. She has always had a reputation for running at the mouth but we did not expect this from her at a time when the youth of this country are sacrificing their precious lives to ensure that the separatist terrorist LTTE is defeated. The woman should indeed be ashamed of herself (Full letter in Island).

European Union and Human Rights Watch - Dr. P. A. Samaraweera, Australia - It was reported in The Island of 26 February that Anne Neistat of the Human Rights Watch told the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, about Human Rights violations by the Sri Lankan government and the security forces. She had said that shelling by Sri Lankan forces had "killed dozens if not hundreds in the safe zone with civilian casualties". Jeffrey Lunstead, a former US Ambassador, has made similar accusations to the committee and proposed a political settlement and intervention by the international community. He had proposed imposing conditions on economic aid to Sri Lanka. If so, it is definitely a good deal for Sri Lanka to get rid of the terrorists rather than get aid with strings attached. European Union Foreign Ministers as well had called for a ceasefire and peace talks. It appears that these groups are either being partial, pressured or are in the dark about what actually people in Sri Lanka had gone through in the last three decades. The EU and the HRW seem to conveniently ignore the track record of the LTTE and their violent and undemocratic history (Full letter in Island).
