Russian ambassador’s forthright views

May I request you to provide a little space to publicly convey my appreciation to the Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Sri Lanka, H. E. Vladimir P. Mikhaylov for his candid and forthright views on the situation facing our country as expressed in his interview published in your issue of 30th April.

Having visited the IDP camps and seen at first-hand the admirable humanitarian effort launched by Government to make life as normal as possible to the innocent civilians fleeing from the clutches of the LTTE, the Ambassador has also referred to the hypocrisy and double standards displayed by the West. He has also drawn a parallel with the situation his Government faced in meeting the challenge of a terrorist movement which aimed to weaken and destabilize the Russian Federation in which the hand of interested foreign States and organizations were evident as in Sri Lanka.

All godfathers and angels of mercy of Western nations have been in deep slumber like Rip Van Winkle for over twenty years when the megalomaniac Prabhakaran slaughtered thousands including hundreds of Buddhist priests, devotees observing ‘sil’ and muslims at prayer in mosques and ethnically cleansed the North of the minority communities with twenty-four hours notice. Now that the deadly terrorist outfit has almost been annihilated by the brave forces of the country under the determined leadership of a Government, alarm bells have begun to ring in the West about a so-called rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation developing in Sri Lanka.

While rushing to Sri Lanka to ‘advise’ our Government as to what should be done, the angels of mercy of the West, fly over Iraq where several millions including children have been the victims of one of their worst military mis-adventures ever undertaken. They also fly past Afghanistan where innocent civilians continue to be killed. Their pontifical advice for a cease fire is nothing but a ploy as editorially mentioned by you, to make way for Prabhakaran to flee to safety.

As these missionaries of mercy are representatives of mighty Western nations who profess Christianity and may not be having the time to read the Holy Bible concerned as they are with the ‘the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sri Lanka’ may I draw their attention to the following lines appearing in Mathew, chapter 7, verses 3 to 7 -

"Why do you look at the speck of saw dust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?

How can you-say to your brother, "Let me take -the speck out - of your eye when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?

You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye ".

Let me again profusely thank the Russian Ambassador H. E. Vladimir Mikhaylov for his bold views and exposing the bluff of some of the leading western countries and international organizations who have resorted to even fabricating distorted news reports to paint a false picture of the ground situation at a time when a democratically elected government is doing everything within its means to eliminate the scourge of terrorism and make the country a safer place for all peace loving citizens.
