President Rajapaksa in surprise visit to Kilinochchi, Vavuniya

Colombo, 16 April, (Asiantribune.com): President Mahinda Rajapaksa today visited Vavuniya and Kilinochchi by helicopter, making him the first Sri Lankan Head of State in 38 years to visit Northern Sri Lanka after President J.R. Jayewardene visited Jaffna in 1981, for the campaign for the 1982 Referendum.

The President’s visit which was scheduled for tomorrow was held today due to security reasons.

President Rajapaksa was accompanied by Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Army Commander Lt Gen. Sarath Fonseka, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Wasantha Karanangoda and Air Force Commander Air Vice Marshal Roshan Goonetilleke.

The Presidential chopper left Colombo at 8.30 am and the entourage visited Kilinochchi, the former administrative capital of the LTTE which was liberated by the Armed Forces on January 2.

The President met the troops of the Sri Lanka Army in Kilinochchi, ate milk rice with them and wished them the best for the just concluded Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

The President also commended the Armed Forces for their gallantry and their sacrifice in liberating the North from the devastation of the LTTE and also praised their efforts in their humanitarian operations. The President also visited some of the areas which were destroyed by the LTTE carnages over the years.

The President and the Commander in Chief also visited the Vanni Security Forces Headquarters at Vavuniya and wished the personnel of the Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy and the Sri Lanka Air Force and wished them for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year and commended them for the gallantry they have displayed in liberating the North after two decades and also for the role they have played in humanitarian operations they have launched in liberating the civilians from the clutches of the LTTE in the No Fire Zone.
