Mockery of international calls for a ceasefire

By Ruwan Weerakoon in Colombo

Throughout the near 30-year conflict in Sri Lanka, between the Government forces and the separatist LTTE, commonly known as the Tamil Tigers, Western countries such as the USA, UK and Canada, as well as some European countries, have clearly accepted and intimated to the Sri Lankan Government that they consider the LTTE a terrorist organization. Most of these countries went to the extent of imposing a ban on the outfit’s activities within their borders. In addition, they have always insisted to the Lankan Government that they were concerned only about human rights violations.

Strangely, when LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and a few of his high ranking leaders are boxed in within a mere 17 sq. km. sliver of land area, that too declared a NFZ for the trapped civilians, the USA, UK and some Western countries are exerting pressure on Sri Lanka for a ceasefire and more negotiations.

These countries’ probable agenda has been laid bare now. They want to safeguard Velupillai Prabhakaran, the head of the LTTE, even branded by the USA’s own Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as the world’s most ruthless terrorist organisation.

In a similar manner, if al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is boxed into a 17 sq. km. of land in Afghanistan, will the USA declare a ceasefire and go in for negotiations? Absolutely not. The USA will want to see the end of Osama bin Laden. Then, why is the USA pressurizing Sri Lanka to go in for a ceasefire and negotiations with the LTTE? Apparently to divide the island and go ahead with its colonization.

Meanwhile, a series of demonstration were held in the United Kingdom and Ottawa in Canada, where the demonstrators brazenly displayed portraits of the world’s most ruthless terrorist organization leader V. Prabhakaran, and also waved LTTE flags and pictures of the so-called ‘State’ of Eelam (a part of the map of Sri Lanka). While the LTTE is a banned entity in these countries, how come the demonstrators were permitted to publicly display a proscribed outfit’s paraphernalia?

The LTTE’s procurement agent Kumaran Pathmanadan, alias KP, has had a video-conference with Norway’s International Development Minister Eric Solheim recently. During this conversation, KP had specially requested Solheim to exert pressure on the USA, to broker a ceasefire in the ongoing fighting in Sri Lanka.

The Tamil Diaspora in the USA, UK, Canada and some Western countries has lavishly funded the respective countries’ election campaigns. The respective politicians and bureaucrats too have been provided with additional benefits by the LTTE cadres living in those countries. Through these exercises, the Diaspora built a ‘safety net’ for their leader Prabhakaran. Now they are attempting to activate that ‘safety net’, it seems. But the Sri Lankan Government and its people are vehemently adhering to their ultimate goal, to rout terrorism once and for all, from the face of the island nation.

The so-called international community or the Western powers know very well that, once Sri Lanka sorts out its internal problems, it will surge forward in development. They know and have identified the exceptional talents and skill, not to mention the natural resources that the tiny island nation possesses. So, they want the country to remain where it is, or go back further, with the burden of conflicts, and never realise its dream of development.

In 1965, when Singapore separated from mainland Malaysia, then Prime Minister Lee Kwan Yew clearly stated that the little island nation faced a threat from Malaysia. He went on to strengthen Singapore’s defences. Thus, when the island city’s defences became stronger and any threats diminished, it encouraged investors to rush in. That was the success story in Singapore’s economic boom.
But, in contrast to the Singapore scenario, during the near 30-year-conflict in Sri Lanka, there have been four major peace talks - from Thimpu to Sattahip to Geneva - brokered by the international community, and especially by Norway. These negotiations gave only temporary respites to the island. They never made the country stable. It does not require an economic genius to predict that a country should be stable for its economy to boom.

Meanwhile, on Saturday (18) Tamils in Norway staged protests against the ongoing military operations in northeast Sri Lanka. Later, a group of LTTE supporters had entered the Sri Lankan embassy in Oslo and caused heavy damages. Following this incident, the Norwegian police said that they had not apprehended anyone and that investigations were ongoing. The Oslo police should have known beforehand, that the demonstration in itself was a possible threat to the Sri Lanka embassy there, and should have provided adequate security, which they failed to do. It is a normal line of diplomatic duty.

It is pertinent to point out that, when two political parties, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) staged a massive protest opposite the Norwegian embassy in Colombo, against what they claimed as Norwegian interference in the island’s internal affairs, Sri Lanka’s Defence Ministry deployed its elite Special Task Force commandos to safeguard the Norwegian embassy. In addition, the Defence Ministry ordered the setting up of a special police post in the vicinity of the embassy. This is in contrast to how the Sri Lanka embassy in Oslo was treated.

The LTTE cadres living in luxury in countries like the USA, UK, Canada and the West, will keep on encouraging and organizing demonstrations against the Sri Lankan Government. This is because they have been unable to realise their dream of an Eelam in Sri Lanka. Their next probable move will be to agitate and fight for a separate homeland of Eelam in the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Canada or in some Western country.
