The United States' top intelligence agency, Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) says that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is the most dangerous and deadly extremist organization in the world. The official website of FBI in its tops story said that LTTE is far more dangerous terrorists outfit than al Queda, Hezbullah or even HAMAS. Read more...

Current Significant Issues

What is really happening in Sri Lanka today is that a blood thirsty racist group led by some misled Tamils called LTTE is terrorizing against the Government of Sri Lanka and its people irrespective of their ethnicity with an intention of carving out a separate state. There is no conflict as such between Sinhalese and Tamil communities in Sri Lanka. In fact, the majority of the Tamil community lives in peace and harmony among the Sinhalese population through out the country apart from the Northern part of Sri Lanka. The entire Sinhalese and the Muslims population who lived in the Northern area for centuries were either killed or chased away completely by the LTTE Tamil Tiger terrorists. At the moment, not a single Sinhalese or Muslim is living in Jaffna, but, many thousands of Tamils are living in Colombo in peace with the other communities. Based on 2001 census, the Tamil population in Colombo district is 12.1% (see 2001 census). So, who is discriminated ? Tamils or Sinhalese? Do you need more evidence ?

President in Jordan on phone with Defence Secretary, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa informs President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Commander in Chief of Armed Forces now in Jordan on the latest update in the battlefield and the good news.

What is this good news ?

The Sri Lankan president has declared a military victory over the Tamil Tigers after 26 years of bloody civil war. Speaking on a visit to Jordan, Mahinda Rajapakse said he would return home to a nation totally free from the "barbaric acts" of the rebel group.

Are we serious about a solution based on Indo-Lanka Accord ?

Washington Times Editorial says ......Failing that, the Obama administration should mind its own business. The Sri Lankans are winning; we should let them finish the job (Read full Editorial).
Washington Times Editorial says ......We can only imagine American satisfaction if we had al Qaeda in this position. It is unconscionable for the United States to castigate its Sri Lankan ally for prevailing in its war against terrorism. The Tamil Tigers have purposefully created the conditions for a humanitarian crisis and deserve neither amnesty nor mercy. There are ways to help resolve this standoff that will not allow the Tigers to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, such as providing military and intelligence support for pinpoint strikes against the terrorist leadership  (Read full Editorial).
Washington Times Editorial says .... The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, one of the world's most violent terrorist outfits, are surrounded in northern Sri Lanka and about to be destroyed - but Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and European self-styled peacemakers are getting in the way of victory. The meddlers should let Colombo finish off this menace. ...... Last week, Mrs. Clinton played into the hands of the terrorists by blaming the Sri Lankan government for the crisis. "The entire world is very disappointed" that they were "causing such untold suffering," she said (Read Washington Times Editorial). 13th Amendment ........

The ordinary Tamil people don’t care about 13 or 17 amendments. What the ordinary Tamils want is to get on with their day to day life, get on with their agri work in the field, chena, sea, or in the offices and live a peaceful life which they experienced before 1983. We never thought of discrimination, aspiration, grievances before 1983. It was the politicians who planted these poisonous seeds into our hearts and minds. Grievances are there not only for the Tamils but even to the poor Sinhalese people in the South. That’s common to any nationality.

Caution: Images shown on this web site exposing LTTE Tamil Tiger Terrorist atrocities maybe disturbing for some users. Please proceed at your own discretion.

“Tamil Tigers”, also called “The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam” (LTTE) declare that they are fighting the government of Sri Lanka to “liberate” the Tamils. During the past three decades of their “liberation struggle” they forcibly abducted an estimated twenty thousand children as young as ten and converted them into human bombs or cannon fodder. Tamil parents who objected to the forcible conscription of their beloved children were tortured or killed in front of their families. Finally, after seven futile attempts at internationally facilitated peace talks and ceasefires, all of which were reneged by the LTTE, the democratically elected Sri Lankan government decided that the only way to liberate the Tamils from the clutches of the LTTE was to eradicate the oppressors. Sri Lanka learned the hard way that any “ceasefire” interval given to these abominable terrorists would be used by them to recuperate, regroup, rearm and attack without warning. Tigers, once the world’s most feared terrorists, are now confined to a few square kilometres of jungle where they have corralled innocent Tamil civilians to be used as human shields. If not for the Sri Lankan government’s concern for the safety of civilians, the LTTE would have been wiped out from the face of earth many moons ago. Tigers make sure that those who try to escape into government declared safe zones are mercilessly killed, mostly burnt alive and the corpses are displayed as a deterrent to others who would try to escape. These photos were taken by a brave Tamil who managed to escape to a safe zone only last week (Read full report).

The monies that have been collected by TD for LTTE war ....

The monies that have been collected by Tamil Diaspora for LTTE war chest runs into billion of dollars during the past three decades. But, where are we now? What have Tamils achieved over the years? Tamils have earned nothing but humiliation and misery. There times I am ashamed to call myself a Tamil to avoid humiliation as Tamils are branded as a set of terrorists.

Indian intervention in Sri Lankan internal affairs

The Tamil Diaspora should at least realize now .....

The Tamil Diaspora should at least realize now that LTTE’s days are numbered and any funds collected for LTTE will benefit only Pirapaharan and his top LTTE hierarchy. Pirapaharan educated his son with your money. His wife is running around the world seeking a safe haven with your money. Pirapaharan built couple of luxurious bunkers with all the modern facility with your money. It is therefore still not too late to stop financing the dying LTTE; stop organizing protest marches, demos and rallies as the Sri Lankan government is not going to stop now until LTTE who also brought misery to the Tamils is completely defeated.

"Tamil Hitler - Made in India" Prabhakaran, who killed Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, is now seeking help from India.

I reminisce with joy and happiness the days before 1983 - I reminisce with joy and happiness the days before 1983 when LTTE killed 13 soldiers in Jaffna and provoked the Sinhalese in the South to retaliate. We were living with Sinhalese, Muslims, Burghers, Malays like brothers and sisters and that harmony was shattered. We all were one family of one mother Lanka. But unfortunately, LTTE brought us down to ghettos and taught us to hate Sinhalese people. What have we achieved over the last three decades? We have lost our cream of Tamil political leadership sparing only a few like Ananda Sangaree. LTTE killed our educated Tamil politicians; LTTE killed our intellectuals like Dr. Neelan Thiruchelvam, Kethiswera Loganathan, Sam Thambimittu and many others including many Tamil politicians at parliamentary level to village council level. The many youth both men and women sacrificed their lives in this unwanted terrorist war launched by LTTE and ably supported by TD creating a big vacuum in the Tamil population in Sri Lanka. The Tamil minority, once the next biggest ethnic group to Sinhalese has dropped down to third place by Muslims overtaking in terms population. Who is responsible for this catastrophe? We the Tamil Diaspora and LTTE should bear the full responsibility.

Tamil Tiger Terror Machine Forcibly Holding Civilians in the Vanni as a Human Shield

LTTE Tamil Tiger Terrorists are using 'civilians as shields', despite constant urges made by the Sri Lanka Government for the release of thousands stranded in its clutches".

Those who are expressing concern about the security of civilians in the Wanni have stopped short of calling for action against the LTTE, which is using people as a "Human Shield" in Kilinochchi and Mulaitivu. The Sri Lankan government has made arrangements to accommodate civilians to be evicted from the theatre of war, as it successfully did in the Eastern Province. If the LTTE lets go of civilians, the question of their security won’t arise. Therefore, it may be argued that anyone who laments about the plight of civilians without faulting the LTTE or pressuring it to release people in its clutches is, either wittingly or unwittingly, helping further the LTTE’s cause.

MKN may not know that these ruthless terrorists woke up the General Manager and Deputy General Manager at two in the morning, marched them and placed them against the wall of the Cement Corporation and shot them dead point blank. These two officers were keen and had helped the people of KKS whose livelihood depended on the cement industry. These two officers were Sinhala (Island 26, August 2008).

British Foreign Secretary Davis Miliband's Grave concerns of human lives ....... The secret behind the ‘grave concerns of human lives’ of these superpowers are very clear. World politics and arms trade are closely linked. Arms manufacture and dealing is a highly profitable global business. It is estimated that yearly, over 1 trillion dollars are spent on military expenditures worldwide. The United States is the top supplier of weapons to the developing world, accounting for around 36% of worldwide weapons sales, followed by Britain and Germany. Western Arms Manufacturers needs battlefields to sell their Arms. An estimated 500,000 individuals die in small arms-conflicts every year, approximately one death per minute. Are these people concerned for the loss of innocent lives or their loss of business? The Washington Times Editorial http://washingtontimes.com/news/2009/apr/26/tigers-at-bay/ (Sunday, 26 April 2009) should be an eye-opener to those masters who still believe that there is something extraordinary under their blue-eyes and white skin.

Now, it is the responsibility of all patriots to carry the initial message given by Ven Rathana thero to all donor countries, by explaining in details the danger of this so-called secretive Joint Mechanism (SPUR Media Release)

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)

Also known as
The Tamil Tigers, the Eellalan Force, the Ellalan Force, the Tiger Movement, the Sangilian Force, the Air Tigers, the Black Tigers (Karum Puligal), the Sea Tigers, the Tiger Organization Security Intelligence Service (TOSIS), the Women's Combat Force of Liberation Tigers (WCFLT)

Description
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is a Sri Lankan-based organization which advocates the creation of an independent homeland in the north and northeastern part of Sri Lanka which it has called "Tamil Eelam". Its war against the government of Sri Lanka has been fought on three fronts: a political campaign, guerrilla warfare, and a terrorist campaign. The LTTE is committed to using a variety of terror tactics in order to achieve its objectives, including attacking political, economic, religious and cultural targets, as well as targeting civilians. The LTTE's campaign has included plans to create Tamil-only northern and eastern provinces, and to this end it has aggressively expelled non-Tamils from these regions. The LTTE also endeavours to eliminate moderate Tamils and other Tamil militant groups that compete with it for influence and power within the Sri Lankan Tamil community.

World Tamil Movement

Description
The World Tamil Movement, created in 1986, is the leading front organization for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Canada. The various offices of the WTM in Canada transfer funds to bank accounts in Sri Lanka meant for the LTTE. The leadership of the WTM acts at the direction of leaders of the LTTE. WTM representatives canvas areas in Canada with large Tamil populations demanding large donations on behalf of the LTTE. Refusals to contribute often lead to threats and intimidation.

APRC Proposals ....... The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna has already warned the government that it would face dire consequences, at the forthcoming budget, if it backs the APRC proposals for a Federal State. JHU and MEP representatives of the APRC have publicly denounced the Chairman for his efforts to undermine the mandate received at the last presidential election for a unitary state. The persistent attempt by the Chairman of the APRC to sell a set of proposals based on the very same report of the expert panel, rejected by the main political parties (SLFP.JVP, JHU, MEP etc) who were instrumental when bringing the present regime into power, could drag the ruling circles into a difficult situation unless remedial action is taken in time.

Open Warrant Issued to Arrest Prabhakaran

High Court judge Sarath Ambepitiya issued an open warrant through the CID to arrest Prabhakaran and three others who were absconding. He said the LTTE leader was guilty on 51 counts and each count carried 20 years in jail making a total of 1020 years. But for practical purposes the Judge said he was imposing the sentence only on the first ten counts making a total of 200 years in jail.

Canada bans World Tamil Movement

A Toronto-based non-profit organisation has been outlawed by Canadian Cabinet under the Anti-Terrorism Act, in what may signal an aggressive new approach to combating terrorist financing in Canada.

Tamil Tiger thugs attack another two Singhalese students in Pendle Hill, NSW, Australia

The two students were hungry, and they had no time even to cook a meal. So, they drove to the nearby Tamil shop in Pendle Hill to buy ready-made Sri Lankan food boxes. They had just alighted from the car, when they observed several other cars screeching to a halt in front of them. Having learnt about the previous day’s vicious attacks on Singhalese youths by the Tamil Tiger thugs, the two students tried to get into their car. The driver just managed to get in and lock his side of the door. His friend was caught before he got into the car. One thug lifted a letter box from a nearby house and attacked injuring him on the back. Others attacked the car with iron bars smashing all the windows. Through the broken side-glass one thug cut the driver, injuring him on the neck. However, the driver managed to start the car, get his friend in and escape. They drove pell mell to the nearest Police Station at Wentworthville and reported. So far, no one has been apprehended. The two students managed to avoid serious injury although their car is almost a total wreck.

The above is the second attack within a week

‘Our aim was to liberate Tamil people from LTTE terror’ - (Text of the address by President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the ceremonial opening of Parliament on Tuesday). I declare open this fourth session of Parliament at a time when the people of our country, as well as the entire world are celebrating a great victory. I address this session of Parliament at the historic occasion when the hopes and expectations of the Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, Burgher, Malay and all people of our country for several decades, to see a Sri Lanka that is free of murderous terrorism, have been realised (Full report in Sunday Observer).

Who supported Prabha to fight a sovereign State?:

Appoint Commission to probe LTTE terrorism - Ven. Rathana Thera

A Presidential Commission should be appointed to probe into LTTE terrorism and its related activities with special reference to the hostile attitude of certain western countries towards Sri Lanka, said Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) Parliamentarian Leader Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera. He said that during the humanitarian operation the Security Forces exposed the magnitude of the LTTE's underground arsenal. Velupillai Prabhakaran's dream was none other than 'Eelam' which could have been realised through the sophisticated armoury in his possession. The country has the right to know as to who supported Prabhakaran to fight against a sovereign State, the Ven. Thera said. Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka addressing the mass rally at the Parliament grounds called upon President Mahinda Rajapaksa to appoint a Presidential Commission to probe the activities of the LTTE and its shocking caches of sophisticated arms and ammunition (Full report in Sunday Observer).

Confession by Prabhakaran to Tamil Diaspora

(This confession was made on 28/3/2009 and stands currency for ever)

Dear Tamil Diaspora,  I am thankful and grateful to my Tamil Diaspora  for having trust on me and supported me and my LTTE for the last 26 years. I am grateful to you for financially, logistically and in propaganda supporting LTTE over the past 26 years. If not for your support my gang would have been just a rag tag outfit. It is your unstinted support in every way that made LTTE financially powerful than a corporate giant and rag tag into a conventional army.  When comparing with other terrorist groups ours is the only one who had a fleet of commercial ships ( 6 ships were bombed and sunk by bloody armed forces), variety of businesses and shop fronts in many parts of the world for our various activities. The Singala chauvinists and some so called experts on terrorism makes false statements to the effect that we are involved in illegal activities like procuring illegal arms, smuggling narcotics and human cargo etc. In our struggle, there is nothing called illegal. FBI branded my LTTE the deadliest and ruthless terrorist outfit in the world  and I am proud of that being the sole owner of LTTE outfit and I am sure you are also proud of it because it was you who made it happen. It’s with your strategies and your skills that helped LTTE to procure arms legal or illegal is subjective including heavy artillery, latest war technology and communication systems, smuggling assembly plants for light air crafts, mini submarines, suicide sea scooters and you name it we had it. It’s the very dollar and sterling pound that forcibly collected and or voluntary given that made our LTTE to fight the Sri Lankan Government for a separate Eelam for  you and me and for the future Tamil generation for 26 long years (Read full confession published on 28 March 2009)

Importing terrorism for political gain - By Asoka Subhawickrama, Sydney, Australia - Sri Lankan Australians, numbering some 150,000, are gravely concerned about suggestions from certain quarters to give temporary protection visas to Sri Lankan Tamils who claim to be refugees of the war that ended recently. Our political leaders better think twice before making a decision.Internally displaced people (IDPs) in Sri Lanka Sri Lankan government has categorically declared that all the war-affected citizens will be resettled in their villages within six months. If developed countries give a helping hand for this exercise, it could be completed earlier and more satisfactorily. After all, the Sri Lankan government has to look after not only the Tamil IDPs, but the many thousands of Singhalese and Muslim IDPs who fled the ethnic cleansing of the North and the East by the Tamil Tigers during the past 3 decades. Helping Sri Lanka achieve the goal of resettling the IDPs would in turn help the developed countries in stemming the influx of “refugees” and “economic asylum seekers” from Sri Lanka. Now that the war is over, the Sri Lankan government has clearly stated that there is no reason for any one to seek refugee status in a foreign country. The guns are silent; suicide bombers are dead or have surrendered, the security forces are returning to barracks, the people and the government of Sri Lanka are doing everything they can to help the IDPs, but some people in the developed world are trying to paint a picture of gloom and despair for reasons only they know or don’t know (Read full letter).

Peace that the LTTE spurned - There had been many attempts at reaching a peaceful conclusion to the separatist movement spearhead by the LTTE in the north and east of the country (Read full article).

Response to The Daily Telegraph, UK - The West raced to save the Tamil terrorist leaders - By Asoka Subhawickrama, Sydney, Australia - The news item “British officials in race to stop 'war crime' by Sri Lankan forces” (22/05/09) highlights the absurd and futile attempts that were taken by the West to sabotage Sri Lanka’s war on terror. According to their side of the story, the West expect Sri Lankan soldiers to identify two men trying to surrender in the dark wee hours of the morning among many other figures shooting and attacking them with suicide bombs. England and Norway say the soldiers' failure is a war crime. The allegation comes from two developed countries in the West, who - in spite of being armed with the latest “smart technology” - cannot differentiate between an Afghan wedding house and a Taliban hideout in broad day light. Aerial bombing which results in the death of the entire wedding party including the bride and the groom is not a war crime, only just collateral damage. Sri Lanka expelled Norway from the "peace facilitator" role after discovering their dealings with the Tamil Tiger terrorists, even training the Tiger cadres at their military bases and providing container loads of sophisticated war material to the terrorists during the “ceasefire” they brokered. UK has the ignominious distinction of harbouring Anton Balasingham, Tamil Tiger terrorists’ theoretician and international propagandist on British soil. Anton’s wife Adele, the figurehead of the LTTE suicide women cadres, still lives safely in England with no law suits to bother her. She is, however, persona non grata in her own country, Australia. We know the true agenda of these humanitarian champions. Just butt out, UK and Norway from Sri Lanka (Read full letter).

How troops foiled Praba’s last attempt to flee: Cowardly leader dies inside a bush in Nanthikadal lagoon - The entire Sri Lankan nation on Friday marked the dawn of a new era with tens of thousands of people marching along the streets in Sri Lankan capital to pay their tribute to the War Heroes who turned decades-long dream of the nation to unite this country under one flag, into a reality. President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who was in jubilant mood after this record breaking victory against the most ruthless terror outfit of the world with clear proof to say that its leader was killed, spelled out his vision for the future Sri Lanka addressing the mammoth crowd that thronged into the Parliament grounds to mark this victory. It was heartening, when he said that each and every citizen of this country should remember the fact that in each and every breath they should pay their gratitude to the War Heroes who sacrificed their lives and limbs to make this victory a reality (Full report in Sunday Observer).

Prez says LTTE child soldiers will be brought to mainstream -  Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has assured UN chief Ban Ki-moon that the LTTE child soldiers would be brought to the mainstream as "productive citizens" and the civilians displaced due to the war would be resettled within 180 days under globally-accepted norms. "The objective of the rehabilitation process presently underway is to reintegrate former child soldiers into society as productive citizens," he told the the visiting UN Secretary General in the northeastern town of Kandy. Rajapaksa and Ban recognised the issue of a large number of former child soldiers, forcibly recruited by the LTTE, as an important matter in the post-conflict context, said a joint statement issued at the end of Ban's visit to the country. Rajapaksa said the government was already working on a plan to resettle most of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) within 180 days. He told Ban that all resettlement will be done under internationally-accepted norms. This would require ensuring the safety of the IDPs as well as their rehabilitation and providing them with new skills for successful livelihood. Rajapaksa also referred to his policy of zero tolerance in relation to child recruitment, the statement said. In cooperation with UNICEF, child-friendly procedures have been established for their "release and surrender" and rehabilitation in Protective Accommodation Centres (Full report in PTI).

Disillusioned over LTTE leadership: Over 10,000 ex-terrorists under Govt care - From the day the Wanni battle took a fierce turn over 10,000 LTTE terrorists surrendered to the military, according to top military officials. The continuous defeats of the LTTE had made its cadres to abandon the outfit in large numbers. Over 7,237 terrorists who had surrendered to the military are now being rehabilitated at various rehabilitation centres. Among them are 1,601 females. Another batch of 202 terrorists including 80 males are living in IDP camps. According to officials, they were identified by the military and separated from the refugees in the welfare camps. “They surrendered to the troops when the military offensives got tough. The 202 terrorists including females are well trained LTTE terrorists”, they said. The officials said over 2,379 LTTE terrorists were identified by the military. Among them are terrorists who volunteered to surrender to the troops. Over 2,065 males said that they surrendered to the troops at the Forward Defence Lines as they were disillusioned with their leadership. They had sensed the historic defeat and realised that the LTTE cadres had to fight to protect the life of the LTTE leader and not for Eelam. The terrorists who surrendered are provided with facilities and most of them have been sent to rehabilitation camps. Over 271,967 refugees have sought protection under the Government. The majority of them who had been kept by the late LTTE leader as hostages fled the No Fire Zone in Puthumathalan despite the terrorists’ tough warnings from April 20-22. Having successfully concluded the world’s biggest hostage rescue operation, the military saved the lives of over 180,000 people without firing a single round of bullets. The IDPs are being facilitated in Government welfare centres in 29 locations, including Government schools (Full report in Sunday Observer).

Equal rights for all: UN Secy. Gen. endorses President’s stance - United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon endorsed the stance taken by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in bringing the country together and ensuring the equal rights of all citizens irrespective of their racial and religious differences. The UN Chief was speaking to the press at the Queens Hotel, Kandy after his meeting with President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the President’s House in the Hill Capital. Ban Ki-Moon said that he was happy with the discussion he had with President Mahinda Rajapaksa and he also shared the views expressed by the President in finding an early settlement to the crisis in the country by uniting all people with equal rights. Commenting on the end of the LTTE terrorism he said that the outfit was very unfair by keeping the innocent civilians as human shields in the war-torn areas. The UN Chief also said that extra care should be taken for the welfare of the internally displaced children, pregnant women and the elderly persons. He also added that the Government has assured him that before the end of this year 80% of IDPs would be settled in their original places. Elaborating further on the settlement of the IDPs in their original places the UN Chief underlined that de-mining should be given priority before any kind of resettlement of the IDPs. Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama also accompanied Ban Ki-Moon at the press briefing and categorically said that the Sri Lankan Security Forces carried out the war against terrorism without leaving room for any human rights violations (Full report in Sunday Observer).

THE FINAL RIDE: The monster, who lived by fire and died by fire - Velupillai Prabhakaran is carried in a stretcher by troops.

Maps of airports found in LTTE ammo dump - High technical data on Airports and Air Force bases in Sri Lanka including maps and manuals of sophisticated aircraft were found by the Sri Lanka Army hidden in a massive LTTE arms and ammunition dump. Troops attached to the 57 Division commanded by Major General Jagath Dias recovered the arms and ammunition East of Pudukkudyirrippu, according to ground sources. The arms and ammunition included, 300,000 M16 primers mainly used in manufacturing Anti Personnel mines, 40,000 detonators, 100,000 5.56mm ammunition used for M16 weapons, 80,000 9mm rounds, 20,000 3.47 mach rounds and 30,000 0.38 ammunition. The arms and ammunition were recovered by the 18 Vijeyaba Infantry Battalion under the 572 Brigade commanded by Colonel Senerath Bandara during the search and clear operations. Following the historic victory over terrorism, the Sri Lanka Army expedited the search and clear operations in the affected areas enabling resettlement and development work to be initiated as early as possible. All the Divisions and Task Forces are conducting search and clear operations providing more strength (Full report in Sunday Observer).

International media and LTTE propaganda war - An Opinion - Dr.P.A.Samaraweera - During the Sri Lankan war, the LTTE malicious propaganda machinery worked round the clock to convince the world that the civilians held as hostage were staying willingly and certain sections of the international media sympathetic to them colluded and gave wide publicity to the LTTE stand. They were supported by countries and international organisations backing the terrorists. So in addition to the real war fought by the forces there was also a heavy handed propaganda war by the LTTE to demoralise the government, the forces and the people. For example, some terminology and phrases used were, "Un-winnable war, Invincible guerrillas... The Sri Lankan conventional army could never ever defeat the well funded and disciplined guerrilla organisation ... Terrorism cannot be militarily defeated..." Even after Prabhakaran was killed, the Tamil Website and the Tamil diaspora cried that he was well and alive overseas. So the LTTE supporters and the international media backing them lobbied very hard to condemn Sri Lanka. Therefore, it was over to the local patriotic media to neutralise the malicious propaganda (Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

Prabhakaran’s satellite cell phone a fountain of secret information - The satellite cellThe satellite cell phone found beside the dead body of LTTE leader Prabhakaran phone found beside the dead body of LTTE leader Prabhakaran is said to be a fountain of secret information said National Security spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella today. Police have unraveled several secrets about international connections of the LTTE by listening to the conversations Prabhakaran had with several persons in Malaysia, Singapore, India and Italy just before he was killed. The Intelligence Unit of the Sri Lanka Army and certain private specialists in satellite communications have been called in to assist the Police who are confident of tracing the various individuals and their locations all over the world, who were very close to Prabhakaran, just before he died. It is reliably understood that Prabhakaran had several important teleconverstions with Chief of the international network of the LTTE, Kumaran Padmanathan, better known as KP, during several days before Prabhakaran’s end came. Using ultra modern satellite technology, Police are confident that they will be able to trace the locations of several persons who spoke with Prabhakaran during his last days (Asian Tribune).

Some fathers need not claim paternity - By Malinda eneviratne -  These are days of victory. As such there is very little reason for apportionment of blame. There is, on the other hand, a manifest abundance in the matter of claiming credit. It is natural after all. Victory has a thousands fathers, they say, defeat is orphaned. I really don’t care who consumes what in the credit cake regarding the defeat of the LTTE. What matters is that this war is over and that the LTTE is history. On the other hand, I think just as we cannot begrudge the security forces for the sacrifice, determination and ability to deliver, we should not forget others who contributed. Of course I have no way of knowing all the names of those who helped one way or another to give us this moment of triumph, but there are names and there are names and some must be mentioned. I am thinking especially about those who understood long ago that the LTTE does not understand or want to understand the language of negotiation and therefore it is necessary to eliminate the outfit through military means. Today it seems almost a no-brainer, but there was a time when Governments, Presidents, academics, key personalities in the NGO sector and of course journalists who were adamant that Prabhakaran cannot be defeated military. Some of them were against military action period whether or not such action could destroy the LTTE. Some were naive and some were not (Full report in Sri Lanka Guardian).

Sorry, no afterlife for Prabhakaran or the LTTE - By Malinda Seneviratne - When gods turn out to be mortal the worshippers are benumbed and languish in disbelief. It is natural for the most naïve to cling on to the flimsiest of hope that the death was fabrication. After all, when those who are immortalized come to take up residence in vast swathes of one’s sense of meaning and being, and pledge over and over again to create for one a private heaven on earth, mortality is insufferable. Prabhakaran’s politics required that kind of deification. Deification alone guaranteed that many if not all adherents would never believe that the deified could do wrong. It would always be shoved under the conscious-carpet or dismissed as vile fabrication by the unbeliever. Deification can happen in two ways. First, and the more abiding, is a natural process whereby a human being with exceptional qualities is venerated over a long period of time, usually across several generations. The second is Prabhakaran’s kind of deification. It is actively and deliberately constructed by the to-be-deified and relevant sycophants. It is the second type of ‘deity’ that causes the most anxiety. Gods don’t fail, and if they do, the fault has to be diverted to some other factor in order for the cosmology to remain in balance. In short, old habits die hard (Full report in Asian Tribune).

A soldier family rejoices: “We are free now”- M. A. Abeysundera, father of Corporal M. A. Sampath, was proud and relieved. Proud because he feels it was because of soldiers like his son that “we won the war”. Relieved because he feels he no longer has to live with apprehension about the fate of his son. “Now we have no fear or worries. There was a time when we did not know whether we would see our son alive. When we watched TV, we would look for our son among the soldiers. Now that anxiety is no more,” said Mr. Abeysundera, who lives in a village in the Puttalam district. Commenting on the fate that befell the LTTE, Mr. Abeysundera said the beating that the LTTE received was not enough when compared to the atrocities it had committed against not only the Sinhala people but also against the Tamils and the Muslims of this country. He said his son was a real hero whose heart was always in the battlefield even when he came home on leave (Full report in Sunday Times).

Suspected LTTE supporters attack five ‘Sam’s Chicken’ outlets in Britain - Five ‘Sam's Chicken’ outlets owned by prominent Sinhala businessman Sam Chandrasinha at Wembley, Kingsbury, Wilsden, Sudbury Hill and Cricklewood in London were attacked by suspected Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) supporters last week. Chandrasinha said that these attacks were launched during the early and late night hours of Wednesday (20). "Glass fronts were smashed, but we quickly repaired them and started business again", he said. "However, the staff who are Sinhalese were deeply disturbed by these attacks". Police are investigating but no arrests have been made so far. Chandrasinha donated nearly £30,000/= (around six million rupees) to the 'Api Wenuwen Api' Fund a few months ago. Sri Saddathissa Buddhist Centre in Kingsbury was also attacked for the 10th time early last Sunday. Chief monk of the Vihara, Galayaye Piyadassi Thero said that this time British Police were able to arrest a suspect in connection with the attack. It was also reported that acid has been thrown at two Sinhala youth in Harrow. The Sri Lanka High Commissioner in London, Nihal Jayasinghe met with a senior official in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London last Thursday and lodged a complain about these attacks (Sunday Island).

Ensuring a decisive end - ‘Reduced to ashes’; this was how Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara described the way in which the remains of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran were disposed of by the Lankan military following the terror chief’s killing, which signaled the end of the prolonged, bloody military conflict in Northern Sri Lanka. Those with a fixation for procedural niceties may very well raise their eye brows at this practice of not allowing even a trace of the dreaded terror chief to remain but the circumstances in which the ‘mopping-up’ action took place by were by no means ‘normal’ and the person concerned happened to be the most wanted criminal in Sri Lanka. Considering that the former leader of the JVP Rohana Wijeweera shared Prabhakaran’s notoriety and criminal record, one is involuntarily compelled to compare the final minutes of the two men and the manner in which their lives ended. In contrast to Prabhakaran, Wijeweera, when captured alive by the military 20 years ago, was called on to address JVP cadres over national TV and direct that they give up their orgy of murderous violence, before, apparently, being killed. Not a murmur was raised in any quarter about the manner in which the JVP chief’s tumultuous life ended because Sri Lanka was heaving a huge sigh of collective relief that the ‘Reign of Terror’ in Southern Sri Lanka had finally drawn to a close. For the majority of Lankans, Wijeweera was a notorious terrorist and mass murderer, and they just could not care less as to how this personification of evil met with his end. A huge blight on their lives had been lifted and this was all they were looking forward to (Full Editorial in Sunday Island).

The LTTE, war and terror - Statement by Karu Jayasuriya, Deputy Leader of the UNP - On this historic occasion, when terrorism has been completely defeated, I would like to take this opportunity to thank, first and foremost, all our brave soldiers, whose steadfast commitment freed the Sri Lankan nation from the scourge of terrorism. I would especially like to remember the soldiers who are no longer with us, those who made the supreme sacrifice for our country. There is no bigger sacrifice than that of laying down your life for your country and the soldiers who laid down their lives in order to ensure peace and unity in Sri Lanka will live forever in our memory. The nation will be eternally grateful to them. I would like to congratulate the Secretary, Defence, the Service Commanders and the IGP for providing the forces with the required military leadership and the President, for the political leadership, which made this victory possible. It goes without saying that the ruthless LTTE Leader Velupillai Prabahakaran, who could best be described as a killing machine, had no respect whatsoever for human life. This man, who tried to run a totalitarian and fascist state, has today suffered a fate he richly deserved. I would also like to point out that there are many political and military leaders who played important roles, which enabled our heroic soldiers to achieve this unprecedented military victory (Full report in Sunday Island).

NGOs smuggling IDPs out — Govt. - Attempts to smuggle out youth from camps housing Internally Displaced people (IDPs) prompted the Government to impose restrictions on visits, a senior Government official said yesterday. Human Rights Ministry Secretary Rajiva Wijesinha said certain persons with the connivance of Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) workers were involved in this plot. In the light of this, security sources said, a thorough screening of IDPs was under way in the camps. The purpose was to identify persons who were either guerilla cadres or had links with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Mr. Wijesinha said the authorities were also looking into reports that paramilitary operatives were known to be loitering inside the camps after gaining access through certain NGOs and this matter was being treated seriously by government authorities. “The restrictions are aimed at bringing the situation in the camps to manageable levels where security is given the top most priority. Things get complicated when there are too many vehicles running up and down the camps thereby compromising security,” Prof: Wijesinha said. He said 52 NGOs had been mandated to operate inside the IDP camps and none of them was willing to operate on foot but insisted they brought their air conditioned vehicles which raised a lot of dust and dirt in the air leading to an environmental issue (Full report in Sunday Times).

Govt. ready for DNA test as Prabha is cremated - Government has retained samples of body-parts of Liberation Tigers (LTTE) leader Velupillai Prabhakaran for DNA tests before he was cremated on Wednesday in Mullaitivu. Defence Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said yesterday that the Government was prepared to conduct a DNA test should the necessity arise. “The defence establishment, however, has no doubts that he is dead,” he said. Minister Rambukwella said the fate of Prabhakaran’s wife and two younger children remained a mystery. “It is not clear if they were caught up in the battle or residing overseas,” he said. Details of how Prabhakaran, the man who waged a separatist war for two and half decades, met with his death are still trickling in. No doubt, it’s him, says the government Reports that he was trapped in the fast disappearing No Fire Zone emerged last Monday. The next morning Army officials declared he had died and his body was found near Vellaimullivaikal. Military Spokesman Udaya Nanayakkara said Prabhakaran was found dead after 250 other guerrilllas had been killed as soldiers captured their last enclave, the No-Fire or Civilian Safety Zone on the Mullaitivu coast. Video and still photographs of Prabhakaran were released later on Tuesday. To authenticate its claims that the LTTE leader had in fact died, the Ministry of Defence flew one of Prabhakaran’s erstwhile comrade-in-arms and now minister, Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan. He was earlier LTTE’s Eastern Commander and reneged from the group over differences with his then leader. Mr. Muralitharan alias Col. Karuna said he could confirm that the body was that of Prabhakaran. He said identification for him was easy from a scar on his leg. He had observed this scar during his long years of association with Prabhakaran (Full report in Sunday Times).

The end of Eelam War IV and the end of a bloody era -  Last Monday the entire nation celebrated the end of a bloody era as the Sri Lankan government trumpeted victory over the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) that had been fighting a separatist war for nearly three decades. As the news of the Sri Lanka Army closing in on the final stronghold of the LTTE in the Vellamullivaikal area broke, people from all walks of life glued themselves in front of a television or radio. Once the news of the entire island being liberated reached the public, jubilant crowds began to light fireworks and parade the streets while vehicles flying the Sri Lankan flag and tooting horns hit the streets. Some houses marked this occasion with women from the neighbourhood playing the rabana while in some houses the traditional kiribath (milk rice) was made to mark the end to the bloody era and savour the victory the Sri Lanka military had achieved (Full report in Sunday Times).

David Miliband's piccolo diplomacy - Blair at least walked the walk. But this Foreign Secretary can offer only feel good gestures of episcopal concern. I hope President Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka takes time out today to comment on the resignation of Mr Speaker. What the Sri Lankan government has "wanted to see", he might say in the jargon of the new interventionism, is clean and transparent democracy in Britain. Speaking for all Sri Lankans, he would regard the affair of MPs' expenses as "unacceptable" and "not living up to their commitments". A group of Sri Lankan MPs would be visiting Britain to monitor developments. Ridiculous? Yet those are exactly the words and tone of voice used by Britain's Foreign Secretary, David Miliband, in his dealings with what seems like half the globe. The Foreign Office wakes each morning and scans the world's conflicts to ponder where it might score a quick headline with a call for peace, reform, a ceasefire or "United Nations' action" (Full report in Sunday Times).

IDPs: Govt. already acting on agreed areas of priority - President to Ban Ki-moon The Government is already giving the highest priority to the issues raised by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon with regard to the massive influx of Internally Displaced Persons held hostage by the LTTE, and matters that have arisen following the defeat of LTTE terrorism, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa at their meeting at President's House, in Kandy today (May 23). The Secretary General, who met the President after a visit to IDP relief villages in Vavuniya earlier today, said progress must come in three critical areas such as immediate humanitarian relief, followed by reintegration and reconstruction, leading to a sustainable and equitable political solution in Sri Lanka (Full report in Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

President conferred with the highest national honour - His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa, President of Sri Lanka and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces has been conferred with the highest national honour Vishawakeerthi Sri Threesinhaladishwara. The prelates of Malwathu and Asgiri chapters awarded the title to the president at the national ceremony to mark the reunification of the country and honour and invoke blessings on the President and war heroes for liberating the country and nation from terrorism held at the historic Magul Maduwa of the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy today (May 23). An emotionally moved President said the blessings of the Maha Sangha was the greatest strenght in the effort to unite the divided nation after thirty years, and placed his reverence at the feet of the venerable maha sangha. He recalled with gratitude the yeoman service rendered by the Defence Secretary, Service Chiefs,IGP and the gallant armed forces in the battle to protect and unite this country (Full report in Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

Canadian Sri Lankan community in Toronto is under violent attack by the LTTE Tamil Tiger Terrorists

PRESS RELEASE - CANADA MUST PROTECT SRI LANKAN CANADIANS - by Bandula Jayasekara, Consul-General for the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka - The Government of Canada and provincial police forces must take immediate steps to protect peaceful Canadians of Sri Lankan origin. Early this morning a ‘Sinhalese’ Sri Lankan restaurant in Brampton was firebombed by suspected Tamil Tiger supporters. Last week the Sri Lankan Buddhist Temple in Scarborough was set on fire, again by the same extremists, causing $40,000 in damage. Other Sri Lankan community establishments (as opposed to Tamil Tiger fronts) are under significant threat in Canada but especially in the Greater Toronto Area. Peaceful Canadians of Sri Lankan origin cannot even gather at places of worship in Toronto . Their children are under threat in their schools and other places. Many of them have received hate mail and threatening phone calls. Some say that they are scared to organize cultural or sports events because they fear Tamil Tiger operatives. The threat level has increased significantly since the Tamil Tigers and their leader Prabhakaran were eliminated earlier this week. This follows a worldwide pattern; Sri Lankans have been attacked and injured and Sri Lankan establishments, including many embassies, in Great Britain , Europe, and Australia have been attacked and damaged. It is with regret that I say that nothing has been heard from government officials, provincial or federal, subsequent to the attacks and threats in Canada on Sri Lankan establishments except for Minister Jason Kenney’s condemnation of the burning of the Scarborough Buddhist Temple . I am especially dismayed by the silence of the Premier of Ontario, Mr. McGuinty. There is no point in issuing anodyne statements by Canadian politicians. What is required is action. What is required is proactive police protection of establishments that the community has identified and that should be 24/7 until the threat passes. What is required is active intervention in schools to remove the threat of Tamil Tiger thuggery within. It is terrible that innocent, law-abiding Sri Lankan Canadians are being subject to these outrages. As Consul General for the Government of Sri Lanka I have been approached by many with their stories. It is not within my power to protect these people. I can only appeal to the Canadian authorities to put a stop to the Tamil Tiger operatives who threaten the people whose homeland I represent (Read full Press Release in SPUR)

Toronto Sinhalese ‘really worried’ after second apparent arson attack - A suspicious Brampton fire consumed greater Toronto’s only Sinhalese restaurant early yesterday, which if confirmed as arson would make it the second fiery attack on a Sri Lankan establishment in less than a week. A Buddhist temple in Scarborough went up in flames on Saturday, in what Toronto police have deemed a criminal fire, igniting fear in the Sinhalese community that the Sri Lankan army’s defeat of the rebel Tigers of Tamil Eelam last Saturday may have made them targets. “It can’t be a coincidence,” Hasaka Ratnamalala, an executive member of the Sri Lankan United National Association of Canada, said yesterday after the fire at Lanka Gardens in Brampton. “All of the community is scared.… I am really worried about my life.” In a statement yesterday the Sri Lankan consulate blamed both incidents on ‘‘suspected Tamil Tiger supporters.’’ Peel police were reluctant to deem the restaurant blaze a deliberate attack on the Sinhalese owners, saying the cause of the fire, while suspicious, has not yet been established. But Constable Wayne Patterson said the force is “aware” of events a world away. “It’s definitely something we need to be cognizant of,” he said. “We need to do our due diligence and make sure it was arson before we jump to any conclusions.” Toronto Police say arsonists broke in to a Sri Lankan Buddhist temple on Kingston Road at 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, poured an accelerant just inside the door and set it alight before fleeing the scene. Authorities have not linked the blaze to the conflict in Sri Lanka — which has sparked traffic-snarling mass demonstrations by the local Tamil population, including a candlelight vigil last night at Queen’s Park (Full report in Toronto Star).

Media Release of SLUNA - THE CANADIAN SRI LANKAN COMMUNITY IS UNDER ATTACK - At this very moment, in the Toronto area, the Canadian Sri Lankan community is under violent attack. This morning the only ‘Sinhalese’ owned Sri Lankan restaurant in the GTA, Lanka Gardens at 220 Wexford Road in Brampton, a popular gathering place, was fire-bombed causing extensive damage and unknown loss. Earlier this week, the Sri Lankan Buddhist Temple at 4698 Kingston Road in Scarborough was set on fire causing $40,000 in damage. Sri Lankan owned establishments and Buddhist temples in London, England and other European cities too have been similarly attacked, whilst protesting pro-Tamil Tiger mobs carried out attacks on Sri Lankan embassies as well. In the community, our children are being assailed daily by threatening emails, text messages, phone calls, and personal verbal and even physical abuse. The fear of attack is so pervasive that the community is very concerned about organizing cultural, sports, or social gatherings. Sri Lankan-Canadians fear going to Buddhist temples. They fear riding the TTC, especially the subway. Threats are particularly virulent against Tamil Canadians who oppose the Tamil Tiger machine but other communities are now being targeted. Our organization suspects that supporters of the Tamil Tigers are behind these outrages. Over 8,000 hardcore Tamil Tiger operatives, including men and women who have been active Tiger combatants in Sri Lanka, are known to have been offered refuge in Canada; most of whom live in the GTA. This fact was brought to the attention of the Senate Hearings on Canadian National Security by Dr. Peter Chalk, Senior Policy Analyst with the Rand Corporation based in the USA, who is a consultant on terrorism and defense studies to several western governments. It will be no stretch to think that the recent military defeat of the Tigers and the death of their leader Prabhakaran has set off a vengeful witch hunt against Sri Lankan targets. We Sri Lankan-Canadians appeal to local police forces, the provincial government headed by Dalton McGuinty, and the federal government led by Stephen Harper for help. What is going on cannot be countenanced. It is utterly un-Canadian. We are peaceful, law abiding, loyal citizens of Ontario and of Canada. We should not have to deal with the perpetrators of this violence ourselves. City mayors, Premier McGuinty, Prime Minister Harper please intervene and ensure protection for us before something more serious takes place (Read full Media Release in SPUR).

Tamil Tigers to blame for fire: Sri Lankan official - A suspicious overnight fire that gutted a Sri Lankan restaurant is evidence that the Tamil Tigers are "on the rampage in Toronto," charged Sri Lanka's consul general, who said the Sinhalese eatery had been previously targeted and harassed by Tiger flag-waving motorists. Consul General Bandula Jayasekara arrived at the Lanka Gardens restaurant at 220 Wexford Rd. to survey the damage caused to the restaurant, which sometimes caters Sri Lankan consular events in Toronto. The Sri Lankan diplomat said Lanka Gardens owner Ranjith Tilakaratne told him in a 4:30 a.m. phone call that people waving Tamil Tiger flags had driven around his restaurant in previous weeks, honking their horns and shouting out the window. As well, the glass on the restaurant's front door was smashed about two weeks ago, Tilakaratne's wife Chandrika confirmed at the scene. Members of the Sinhalese community said the 2:45 a.m. blaze is a sign that tensions arising from Sri Lanka's 26-year Civil War have spilled over to Toronto and have escalated to violence. Since January, thousands of Tamils have been regularly protesting in downtown Toronto against what they say is systemic discrimination against Tamils in their homeland from the majority Sinhalese. The consul general, who arrived in a black tinted car with two RCMP escorts, was driven to the Brampton restaurant from a meeting in Scarborough, where he met with Immigration minister Jason Kenney's chief of staff, Agop Everklian to discuss last week's apparent fire bombing of a Sri Lankan Sinhalese buddhist temple. "People here are under threat, Jayasekara said. "It's really about what the Tamil Tigers are up to. They're on the rampage here in Toronto." (Full report in Toronto Sun).

Eatery targeted, Sinhalese say - Sri Lanka's consul blames Tamil sympathizers for restaurant fire a week after temple torched - An early-morning fire at a Sinhalese restaurant in Brampton yesterday was set by Tamil sympathizers, Sri Lanka's consul-general in Toronto believes, while investigators say the blaze is "suspicious." Standing with an RCMP bodyguard outside the scorched Lanka Gardens restaurant on Wexford Rd., in the Kennedy Rd.-Bovaird Dr. area, Bandula Jayasekara urged Canadian politicians to take a strong stand against violence targeting Sinhalese Canadian citizens, businesses and places of worship. "First a temple is attacked. Now a restaurant," said Jayasekara. "It's tragic that this is happening here. Canada has to take a serious look at this and put a stop to it," he said, adding Sinhalese Canadians "are living in fear here." Jayasekara said an RCMP officer was assigned to accompany him for security in public about two weeks ago in response to the tensions escalating here over the recently ended war in Sri Lanka. He had met earlier yesterday with a representative of federal Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney to express his concerns over a fire last Saturday set by intruders at a Scarborough Sinhalese Buddhist temple, causing $20,000 to $30,000 damage. He also spoke to Kenney about yesterday's incident. The temple fire coincided with the announcement by Sri Lanka that the Tamil Tigers had been defeated. Jayasekara said he was called at 4:30 a.m. yesterday by Lanka Gardens owner Ranjith Tilakarathne, who told him of the attack. The front window had been smashed and a Molotov cocktail-like device had been tossed inside, Jayasekara said. Police and fire officials would not confirm such details, saying only that the cause is "suspicious," and that evidence has been gathered. Mahinda Gunasekera, honorary president of the Sri Lanka United National Association of Canada, condemned the incident (Full report in The Star).

In Britain, terrorists have descended on Sri Lankan, Indian and Chinese missions in London, some restaurants and temples with impunity. LTTE members are also on the warpath in Canada and several other countries.

How a cyanide capsule delayed Prabhakaran's meeting with Rajiv Gandhi - It was June 1985 and there was an interesting visitor to Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's 7 Race Course Road residence—Velupillai Prabhakaran, the young chief of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The Tigers were then the largest and best organised of the pro-Eelam groups fighting for a separate homeland in Sri Lanka. Prabhakaran was put up at the Ashoka hotel and accompanied by his senior lieutenants-Mahendrajah alias Mahattya and Anton Balasingham. When the trio reached the security screening area at the PM's residence, the newly- raised Special Protection Group (SPG) which exclusively protected the Prime Minister, raised an alarm. All the leaders were wearing cyanide capsules carried in a glass capsule which dangled from black threads around their necks. The cyanide capsule was an accessory all LTTE cadre sported to avoid torture at the hands of the Sri Lankan authorities. Both the IB and the newly-raised Special Protection Group (SPG) which guarded the PM were unanimous—the cyanide capsules would have to be taken off. Mahattya and Balasingham complied, but Prabhakaran refused. "This is my protection, how can I take it off?" the indignant leader told me in Tamil through an interpreter (Sri Lanka Guardian).

“Winning the War on Terrorism – The New Dawn” - Speech at 9th Annual Conference of the Chartered Institute of Marketing Sri Lanka Region, Cinnamon Grand Hotel - 22nd May 2009 - By Dr Palitha Kohona -  I would like to speak on the theme that is on everyone’s lips. Sri Lanka is one of those rare cases where terrorism has been comprehensively defeated substantially, by our own efforts despite all the advice, reservations and fears, publicly expressed, to the contrary. Once many, including senior officials in our own country, believed that the LTTE could not be defeated by the Government Security Forces. The LTTE is now a shattered effigy of its former self, having been methodically swept aside by the Sri Lankan security forces. The war on terrorism is won – now we have to win the peace. We have, however, seen the propaganda frenzy of the dying LTTE and its supporters, avidly lapped up by the sensation-seeking media and reflected enthusiastically by Western liberal minded politicians keeping a weather eye on significant Tamil groups in their electorates. The rage continues to be nurtured by falsehoods and clever inventions. The media keeps this going. Allegations of genocide are purveyed. But, we note that thousands of Tamil civilians left LTTE-controlled areas over the years to live peacefully in areas under Government control. (54% of Tamils live in Sinhala dominated areas in the South, outside the so-called homeland). Charges of indiscriminate bombings of civilians, including medical facilities, sometimes backed by satellite images sourced to the United Nations, continued to be made, and had to be refuted by challenging their veracity and the lack of corroborating evidence and large scale movements of civilians to Government-controlled areas. Suggestions of large numbers of civilian deaths, made even by leaders of countries whose own forces were causing thousands of civilian deaths in anti-terrorist campaigns far from their own borders, also had to be refuted. The tendency for the pot to call the kettle black is indeed unfortunate. The Government steadfastly maintained its own commitment to minimize civilian casualties among its own citizens. The Tamils of the North are our own people, and as to why the Government would wish to create sympathizers and recruits for the LTTE cause by harming civilians, is not only confusing – it is not logical (Full report in Sri Lanka Guardian).

Address by President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the ceremony to pay tribute to the Heroes of War at the Parliament Grounds - This is the first War Heroes commemoration rally being held in the country that has obtained complete freedom after 30 years. I address you today a country that is completely free, in a unitary state, under a single national standard. Many years ago many of you too, did not think it would be possible to defeat the LTTE militarily. Not only you, even the international community did not believe we would be ever able to carry out that task. Some national leaders from abroad told me that the LTTE leader was one who had achieved the best skills in warfare; that he had won in battles against many of our military commanders. The LTTE had both strength and experience. Therefore, we should not go to war with him. They wanted what was already divided to be given to the LTTE (Full report in Sri Lanka Defence Ministry).

The US “Wall StreetJournal”newspaper commends the stern decision taken by the Sri Lankan President - The premier US newspaper the Wall Street Journal also states Prabhakaran's apparent demise is the Sri Lankan equivalent to killing Osama bin Laden. The WSJ describes the Sri Lankan defeat of the LTTE as “a win that vindicates one of the major lessons of September 11th: Most of the time, terrorists have to be defeated militarily before political accommodation is possible”. Defeating the LTTE ends one of the world's longest running civil wars. It also vindicates one of the major lessons of September 11: Most of the time, terrorists have to be defeated militarily before political accommodation is possible”. Along the way Prabhakaran made extensive use of suicide bombers including a teenage girl who blew herself up to assassinate former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 and relied heavily on child soldiers (SLBC).

UN Secretary General is on a visit to welfare villages in Vavuniya - Visiting Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki Moon is on a visit to the Menik Farm welfare village in Vavuniya today. The UN chief looked into relief provided by the government to the civilians who were recently liberated from the clutches of the LTTE. He also held talks with government officials and staffs of various organisations who are engaged in relief activities. The UN chief is scheduled to meet the President as well as the Foreign Minister later the day (SLBC).

In Australia, LTTE activists have even carried out acid attacks on some Sri Lankans. Worse, the perpetrators have not yet been made to pay for their crime in that five star democracy!

Aussie FM condemns attacks on Lankans in Australia - Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith has condemned the recent unprovoked attack by a gang of thugs on two Sri Lankan young men in which both had been badly injured. The Minister said that the local police investigation is being overseen by a Special Central Unit. He made these observations when he telephoned his Sri Lankan counterpart, Rohitha Bogollagama on May 21 and exchanged views on developments following the defeat of LTTE terrorism in the country. Minister Bogollagama appreciated the strong condemnation of this incident by the Australian Government. The Australian Foreign Minister informed Bogollagama that Australia was increasing its assistance to the humanitarian relief programme for the IDPs in the North by a sum of A$ 10 million. He noted that Australia, a long-standing friend of Sri Lanka was keen that a durable political settlement is found, in order to bring about lasting peace and security in the country. Australia is also concerned about the welfare of the large number of IDPs who have fled the former conflict zone and are now being accommodated in various IDP centres and welfare villages. Hence, he hoped that the additional sum of money that Australia has pledged would help in the humanitarian relief efforts (Full report in Island).

THE GENIUS OF MAHINDA RAJAPAKSA – THE CHOSEN ONE - Prof. K.M. de Silva, the doyen of historians states that it took 13 years for Dutugemunu to regain lost territory and establish total sovereignty over Sri Lanka. But it took less than three years for President Mahinda Rajapaksa to achieve the same goal. Historical comparisons are inevitable because the similarities can explain the confused present with the experiences and the meanings of the more settled past. In one sense, it can be argued that Mahinda Rajapaksa has repeated all over again the history of Dutugemunu. Both felt choked by the prevailing political forces restricting territorial integrity and national sovereignty. Both were engaged in the identical kind of wars to defend the nation. Both adopted down-to-earth strategies to defeat enemies of the nation. Both fought to restore territorial integrity and national sovereignty over every inch of land. Both were committed to reinforce the principle that this island belongs to those who were willing to call it their home, no matter from where they came. Both rejected the idea of dividing the nation into mythical fragments. Both embraced Tamils as a respectable part of the nation. When Dutugemunu erected a monument to King Elara he not only paid the highest tribute to the Tamils but also confirmed that the Tamils too have a dignified place in Sri Lankan culture. In my childhood pilgrimages to the Sacred City I still remember the drummers silencing their drums as we all filed passed the tomb of Elara, carrying alms to the neighbouring temple. It was solemn moment that instilled in me tolerance and respect for another culture, another religion, another non-Sinhalese who deserved our respect for being a just and fair human being (Full report in Daily Mirror).

International Media and LTTE Propaganda War - DURING the Sri Lankan war, the LTTE malicious propaganda machinery worked round the clock to convince the world that the civilians held as hostage were staying willingly and certain sections of the international media sympathetic to them colluded and gave wide publicity to the LTTE stand. They were supported by countries and international organisations backing the terrorists. So in addition to the real war fought by the forces there was also a heavy handed propaganda war by the LTTE to demoralise the Government, the Forces and the People. For example, some terminology and phrases used were, "Unwinnable war, Invincible guerillas... The Sri Lankan conventional army could never ever defeat the well funded and disciplined guerilla organisation ... Terrorism cannot be militarily defeated...". Even after Prabhakaran was killed, the Tamil Website and the Tamil diaspora cried that he was well and alive overseas. So the LTTE supporters and the international media backing them lobbied very hard to condemn Sri Lanka. Therefore, it was over to the local patriotic media to neutralise the malicious propaganda. To thwart the efforts of the Government in the war against the terrorists, certain quarters from the foreign media supported the terrorists. They bowed down to pressure from various elements and gave prominence to false rumours and malicious campaign against Sri Lanka and withheld responsibilities taking cover under free press (Full report in Sri Lanka Army).

‘Victory at great sacrifice’ - The National Flag flutters all over the country today and this was the first time that I am addressing a public rally with thousands of national flags displayed but we should remember that the freedom to hoist the flag from Dondra Head to Point Pedro was given to us by thousands of our valiant Armed Forces who had sacrificed their lives to liberate the country. We should also remember that the breath of the fallen war heroes are blown on the national flag whenever and wherever we hoist it, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said in his address to the mass rally held to felicitate the valiant members of the armed forces yesterday. The rally held at the Parliament ground, Kotte was a sea of heads with over 200,000 people present. The victory we had won was not won on a bed of roses but at great and supreme sacrifice of our valiant Armed Forces who sometimes did not get the opportunity to change their uniforms for weeks, they fought in the ditches, floods and had to destroy embankments over twelve feet or cross lagoons but they did not give up till the final victory over the terrorists was achieved and the country brought under the national flag, he said (Full report in Daily News).

Millions Flocking to Colombo to Celebrate National War Hero Tribute Ceremony - MILLIONS of jubilant Sri Lankans waving National Flags in colorful processions, containing specially prepared decorative floats are on their way towards Sri Jayawardenapura Parliament esplanade to join the National War Hero tribute festival in progress as at 1600 hours on Friday (22). The massive crowd, gathered at the Borella Campbell Park after arriving there from all corners of the island started wending its way to the Parliament complex. Though the ceremony at Sri Jayawardenapura complex has commenced, the procession of jubilant and patriotic civilians was still entering the complex in their hundreds (Full report in Sri Lanka Army).

Army chief visits Kilinochchi, pays tribute to war heroes - Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka yesterday paid tribute to the war heroes who made Sri Lanka's dream of liberating the country from the clutches of terrorism a reality after eliminating LTTE terrorism fully from the Sri Lankan soil, during a visit to Kilinochchi yesterday morning. This was his first field visit after becoming the first ever serving General of the Sri Lanka Army. The Army Commander during his visit paid tribute to the troops who displayed unprecedented bravery during their effort to eliminate LTTE terrorism fully from the country. On his arrival at the Vanni Security Forces Headquarters, he was warmly received by Army Chief of Staff Major General G.A. Chandrasiri and Major General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander Security Forces, Vanni. From the Vanni Security Forces headquarters, he flew to the 571 Brigade headquarters in Kilinochchi where the Army Commander was accorded a warm welcome by Major General Jagath Dias, the senior most GOC in the Vanni liberation operation. Troops of the 7 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment commanded by Lt. Colonel Kithsiri Liyanage accorded a Guard of Honour to the visiting Army Chief. General Fonseka who addressed the Vanni-based all ranks, extended his best wishes and warm greetings to each and every soldier. During his speech, General Fonseka said that had it not been their sacrifices, similar to the heroic deeds of the King Dutugemunu, elimination of terrorism from this soil would not have been possible. He also paid a glittering tribute to all soldiers and reminisced sacrifices made by the soldiers whose names will be written in gold in the future (Full report in Daily News).

Commander Salutes His Troops in Wanni - “It is not big Armies that win battles, it is the good ones”-Marshal Maurice de Saxe; AS THE SAYING GOES, Sri Lankan troops in Wanni who displayed unprecedented bravery that would never go out of fashion were felicitated and warmly congratulated Friday (22) morning by none other than the Commander of the Army General Sarath Fonseka who spearheaded the entire fight against terrorism and offered the necessary guidance and logistics. For a Commander who never trimmed his words saying that “the Army is doing its best” but affirming that “I would not leave this fight for my successor,” his Kilinochchi visit this morning (22) to pay his tribute to those valiant troops was the most significant and historic one, perhaps during the whole of General Fonseka’s career. General Sarath Fonseka on arrival at the Wanni Security Forces Headquarters was warmly received by Army Chief of Staff Major General G.A Chandrasiri. After a brief stopover, General Fonseka made a bee-line to the Kilinochchi. Major General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander Security Forces, Wanni received Commander and his entourage with open arms and conducted him to the 57 Division Headquarters. General Officer Commanding (GOC) 57 Division Major General Jagath Dias, as the senior most GOC, received their veteran chief who masterminded and meticulously engineered all operational tactics against the LTTE on his arrival in the 571 Brigade Headquarters. Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment troops accorded a Guard of Honour to the visiting Army chief (Full report in Sri Lanka Army).

Nation's tribute to Forces - The people of Sri Lanka have paid tribute to the valiant men and women of the Armed Forces, Police and the Civil Security Force for eradicating the scourge of terrorism from our Motherland. The State held a formal ceremony yesterday in Kotte to express the Nation's gratitude to these brave sons and daughters of Mother Lanka. Even a thousand ceremonies are not enough to convey the people's heartfelt gratitude to the Forces who gave their heart and soul to secure a bright tomorrow for the rest of us. It was they who bore the brunt of LTTE terrorism for the last 30 years in order to shield and protect the ordinary people - Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Malays, Burghers and others. It has been revealed that nearly 23,000 Forces personnel had laid down their lives during the past 30 years to defend the territorial integrity and sovereignty of our country. Among them were officers of the calibre of Gen. Denzil Kobbekaduwa and ordinary soldiers like Hasalaka Gamini, who gave his life to stop an explosives-laden Tiger truck. Thousands more were injured and disabled. Nearly 6,200 soldiers made the Supreme Sacrifice and 29,000 have been wounded in the just-concluded humanitarian mission in the North (Full report in Daily News).

Australia is so conscious of human rights that when a dog bit a burglar inside a house a few years ago, its owner was ordered to pay compensation to the thief for keeping a biting dog, mind you, inside his own house! But, the Australian government is not doing enough to protect Sri Lankans against acid-throwing Tigers.

Dial Miliband for Murder - One of the few consolations of having to travel to Geneva practically weekly to deal with yet another British thrust against Sri Lanka is the range of old Alfred Hitchcock movies available en route. One I had not heard of before was ‘Dial M for Murder’, starring Grace Kelly as a rich young lady who married a tennis star who soon tires of her as she does of him. He decides to have her murdered, and blackmails an old acquaintance into attempting this, but the lady manages to fatally stab her assailant during the attempt. The husband gets back home and makes a few swift rearrangements of the scene so that the police then charge the wife with murder. She is convicted, but a solid police inspector smells a rat and turns the tables on the husband, who is duly arrested while the wife is released and able to marry the other man in her life. The husband was played by Ray Milland, but that was not the only reason I thought of David Miliband in the role, with the wife being either the Tamils of Sri Lanka, or else the Sri Lankan government, depending on which has been placed in greater danger by his current maneuvers (Full report in Daily News).

A tribute to our valiant heroes - This is for all of you - men and women - who wear the military uniforms of this nation. You are our heroes. Whether you’re a manning a War Tank, piloting a military aircraft, stopping suspect boats on the high seas or cooking for two hundred in a Mess Hall, you are our heroes. And all of you stood your ground! On the rough high seas when surrounded with enemy suicide boats, in the trenches, in the blood-soaked sands, in the lethally booby-trapped marshes and in the steamy jungles, you stood your ground. You said to them, “It’s enough! To get to our people you’ll have to go over us. And you’re not going over us. “And you succeeded. You did not allow them to go over you (Full report in Daily News).

Nambiar lauds successful mass evacuation - UN Secretary General's special aide and Under Secretary General Vijay Nambiar said it has to be recognized that the evacuation of such a large number of civilians in the conflict zone as a considerable achievement on the part of the Government refuting allegations that the UN failed to prevent a bloodbath in Sri Lanka's conflict. Addressing reporters in Colombo after a week long stay in Sri Lanka which included a visit to the Menik Farm IDP camp and an overflight to the conflict zone where the final battle was fought against the LTTE, he said his impression was that the last of civilians had been moved out before the final intense operation took place. The media questioned if there was any truth in the allegations that some of the civilians were left behind in the conflict zone before the intensed final battles broke out between the LTTE leaders and the military (Full report in Daily News).

The Sri Lankan government must take up the issue of LTTE terrorism abroad with its counterparts concerned and ask them to put their house in order before championing human rights in other countries. British Foreign Secretary David Miliband and French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner must be asked to rein in their pet man-eaters on home soil.

Sri Lanka tells India Most Jaffna Tamils will be resettled in their own homes in six months - Sri Lanka hopes to resettle most of the quarter million Tamils who fled their homes in the Jaffna peninsula, due to the war that has just ended, in their own original homes in six months. This was conveyed to India’s National Security Advisor MK Narayanan and Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon when they called on President Mahinda Rajapakse and met other senior officials in Colombo on Wednesday and Thursday, according to an External Affairs Ministry statement released here this evening. Both sides (Sri Lanka and India) emphasized the urgent need to resettle the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in their villages and towns of habitation and to provide to them necessary basic and civic infrastructure as well means of livelihood to resume their normal lives at the earliest possible. To this end, the Government of Sri Lanka indicated that it intends to dismantle the relief camps at the earliest, and outlined a 180-day plan to resettle the bulk of IDPs in their original places of habitation (Full report in Island).

President congratulates Dr. Manmohan Singh: ‘Our association will be strengthened following your reelection’ -  President Mahinda Rajapaksa in a message to Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on being sworn in as Prime Minister for a second term said: “The Government and people of Sri Lanka join me in extending to you our sincere congratulations on your being sworn in once again as Prime Minister of India. Having come to know you closely, I am indeed happy that our association will be strengthened in the years to come as a result of your re-election. The decision of the people of India to entrust your Party and its alliance partners the responsibility of guiding the destiny of the nation for a further term with a decisive mandate, is a clear endorsement of the policies of the Government under your stewardship. The people of Sri Lanka salute your distinct achievement in joining the late Shri Jawaharlal Nehru as one of the two Prime Ministers of India to go on to a consecutive second term, after the completion of a full five-year tenure. The many achievements to the credit of your earlier administration include sustained and vibrant economic growth combined with social equity. India has been contributing to further strengthening good neighbourly relations in South Asia while assuming in global deliberations the prominent role befitting her political and civilizational strengths (Full report in Daily News).

The killer pets of the West - LTTE terrorists masquerading as refugees in the developed world have laid bare their true faces. Their reaction to the decimation of the LTTE has been to attack anti-terror Sri Lankan expatriates. Their violence has left several people severely injured. In Australia, LTTE activists have even carried out acid attacks on some Sri Lankans. Worse, the perpetrators have not yet been made to pay for their crime in that five star democracy! In Britain, terrorists have descended on Sri Lankan, Indian and Chinese missions in London, some restaurants and temples with impunity. LTTE members are also on the warpath in Canada and several other countries. Strangely, the so-called international community, which is pontificating to Sri Lanka and other aid-dependent nations on the virtues of civil liberties and the rule of law, is doing precious little to deal with the terrorists on the rampage. Australia is so conscious of human rights that when a dog bit a burglar inside a house a few years ago, its owner was ordered to pay compensation to the thief for keeping a biting dog, mind you, inside his own house! But, the Australian government is not doing enough to protect Sri Lankans against acid-throwing Tigers (Full Editorial in Island).

Sri Lanka’s lesson to the world - This tiny island nation has attracted world attention for a feat that no other nation has achieved. Not even countries with bigger armies, larger coffers and a higher say in world affairs. But who, out there is applauding us and our military ? A small number of true friends. How come ? What would it have been if someone had caught Bin Laden or vanquished the Taliban, or the Al Quaeda ? Oh then the world would have celebrated. World sensitivity to terrorism changed after 9/11. Before that, it was a lonely fight for Sri Lanka. The LTTE were freedom fighters, not terrorists. After 9/11 they became terrorists. The UN was quick to respond with a spate of Conventions demanding state intervention to deal with terrorist financing, money laundering, child proscription etc. etc. etc. I have watched the way Sri Lanka’s victory has been reported internationally. I have listened to discussions on a variety of aspects. I have heard callers (supposedly from among the Tamil diaspora) talk of genocide (obviously they don’t know the meaning of that term !). But I don’t find adequate focus on the following – The LTTE had no mandate to represent the Tamil people. They were never given one. Their pursuit (for a separate nation) was their own, not that of the Tamil people (Full letter in Island).

The United States' top intelligence agency, Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) says that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is the most dangerous and deadly extremist organization in the world. The official website of FBI in its tops story said that LTTE is far more dangerous terrorists outfit than al Queda, Hezbullah or even HAMAS. Read more...
